The “presenter” was Dave Garroway, the original anchor of Today. He was chosen to host the show precisely because of his laid-back, casual demeanor. When it first premiered Today was a two-hour daily mishmash, punctuated by frequent technical glitches. The producers wanted someone unflappable who could reassure the audience all was well no matter what happened.
