An association/trivia game with quotes

The idea is to post a quote from a book, movie, or song which brings to mind a current event, historical figure, or otherwise generally well-known person or situation. Then the other players try to guess the inspiration, and of course provide their own quotes.

To make it more possible, state the category your inspiration is taken from, such as politics, entertainment, history, or so on. If no one gets it after, say, three guesses, you should post another hint. Bonus imaginary non-points for naming the quote source, of course.

I’ll start:

“I want to think the best of you, Charlie, everyone does. That’s your curse.” (politics)

That was from “Quiz Show”- Richard Goodwin said it about Charles Van Doren, the cheater on the game show “21.”

I went to Columbia, where the Van Doren family name is still revered!

There are a lot of current politicians this could apply to… Barack Obama, for one. (Lots of people want to believe he’s a miracle worker, which can be a curse.)

I once read a Civil War biography of Cmdr. William Cushing, Lincoln’s Commando, that Van Doren cowrote.

If astorian was correct in his guess, does he post the next quotation? Or could anyone jump in?

Oh hey, I didn’t think anyone else wanted to play. That’s right and it did mean Obama; I figured it would be a fairly simple one to start with. As for the Lincoln book, his character is working on it during the course of the movie, and in one scene Goodwin tests van Doren’s delivery of facts he already knows by quizzing him about it during a poker game.

As for how to play I think anyone should jump in with quotes any time, whether they have a guess or not, to keep it going, such as is possible.

OK, then:

“I’ve never wished anyone dead, but I admit I’ve read some obituaries with a great deal of satisfaction.” (history/law)
