I usually mix mayo and sour cream in recipes calling for straight mayo. Yogurt is sour milk that oughta work well too.

Plotz is Yiddish. It means, roughly, collapse.

I only encountered the word in MAD magazine when I was growing up, so I made the same assumption as you did. I only found out the actual meaning when I read this thread.

I’ve tried yogurt in egg salad, Did not like. I like a whisper of horseradish. No tarragon or relish, and onion, when used, must be raw.
My mom lived in Italian-Jewish neighborhood when she first arrived in the US and picked up some Yiddish while learning English. I didn’t realize words like schlemiel and schlep weren’t English until my little friends looked puzzled.
The Italian-Jewish neighborhood I grew up in, speaking Yiddish, had an amusement park in it near Gravesend Bay that was named in honor of Nellie Bly.
Don’t let a schlemiel schlep the egg crate, or you’ll be a schlimazel.
My dad (who was neither Jewish nor Italian) had this record. I learned a lot of the Yiddish I know from listening to it repeatedly. I had all the routines memorized by the time I was in fifth grade.
