An exerpt from my talk with my fundie brother

Fundie Brother: Didn’t you used to think that homosexuality was immoral?

Me: Yes.

FB: What changed your mind?

Me: I’ve met some and talked to them, thought and prayed about it, and decided I’d changed my mind.

FB: Well, you know that the Bible says that homosexuality is a sin.

Me: It also says you’re not allowed to wear clothes made from more than one fabric.

FB: It does?

Me: Sure does. Go take a look in your closet. I’ll wait.

FB: flipping through shirts 100% cotton…100% cotton…100% cotton…

Me: Check your workshirts.

FB: …50% cotton, 50% polyester.

Me: Sorry, bro. You’re going to Hell.

The distinction is sometimes made between ceremonial laws and spiritual laws. Clearly the prohibition against mixed fabrics is a ceremonial law, while the prohibition against homosexuality is a spiritual law.

How do I know this? Well, it would be just silly to expect me to give up my beloved cotton/poly blends, whereas everyone knows that homosexuality is icky. Q.E.D.

What about the imfamous shellfish probition I’ve heard about in the old testament?

That’s irrelevant, HPL since he claims he doesn’t like seafood.

For every one that curseth his father or mother shall surely be put to death… (chapter 20 verse 9)

The adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death… (chapter 20 verse 10)

and for an encore:

if you hear God command you to sacrifice your son to him, then you should obey …

…and Abraham stretched forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son. (Genesis 22 verse 10).

Weren’t these rules only for the Israelites of the time?

If they were, it would invalidate 18:22 as well, wouldn’t it?

Ahh… but God forgives sins.

SO if my mother gave me a Cotton/poly blend for christmas and I fliped her off while thinking about her hot married soroity sister, how long would I burn for that?

You stopped at the good bit! What did your brother say next??

Polyester blends should be against every religion.

Mixed fabric garments aren’t forbidden, for heaven’s sake. It’s only wool-linen blends that are forbidden.

But for this one, you also have to look at the next few verses. God told Abraham to stop and provided a ram for him to sacrifice before Isaac was killed.

I’ve heard some people say that but I don’t believe the bible says anything about the laws being specific for the Israielites and for that specific time period.

But wouldn’t “Thou Shall Not Kill” have applied to God’s original command to Abraham to kill his son? Or is there an “Except” clause that I missed?

Obviously, the No Kill Commandment doesn’t apply to animals, as the priests slaughter them left & right. So if it doesn’t apply to SOME things, what else doesn’t it apply to?

Ironically (or not?), Genesis 18:22 begins “And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom”.

Leviticus 19:19 in my Bible supports Zev’s argument: “… neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.”

The shellfish prohibition is contained in Leviticus 11:10: "“And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you.”*

Besides the pig, other unclean mammals include the camel, coney, hare, weasel, ferret, mouse, and mole. Additionally, there are lots of birds that can never be featured in kosher meals.

  • italicized words are not emphasized, but represent the translators’ filling of gaps in source texts

No, no, no, listen. God asked Abraham to kill his son as sacrifice as a test. He just wanted to see if Abraham was willing to give up his son for Him and His will.

Quite possibly one of the most misquoted comandments

the translation is

But killing people as a sacrifice to God is fine, right? It would be nice to be able to confirm that I did nothing wrong should the police find the bodies.

Kal i wasnt making excuses for killing or the crusades or anything like that, i was just pointing something out. im not even christian. sorry.
