An idea about bans/suspensions notices.

Admittedly not an original one, but I found it good enough that I thought it could be brought here.

When someone is banned or suspended, the official ATMB notice is always locked by the OP. Is there a good reason for this?. Since most of them result in one or more “explain it to me” and/or commentary threads, why not just leave the original notice open for people to ask and discuss it?

Because people use it to slam the person suspended or banned, which is not our intent. We want you to know about it but it’s not an invitation to a flamefest of the person involved.

Well, the why did it happen threads still come and they are not flamefests of the person banned. I am just saying that leaving it open for people to ask why and all that could happen in the announcement thread so there is only one thread per banning/suspension instead of two or more.

While I don’t want to be arguing a point that the Admins. are fairly adamant on, Sapo has a point. Perhaps a default template could be devised, subject to modification for special cases as needed, saying something like:

Having a cut-and-paste template of this sort and leaving the thread open will deal with the typical “explain it” sort of question in one thread, while preserving the (good) policy of not permitting attacks that cannot be responded to by the person attacked. Some ban/suspend announcement threads, of course, will not attract any comments and drop down the menu of threads rapidly.

I really don’t see the point. Anyone who wants to discuss the banning can start a thread and link to the notice.

In my unofficial, personal opinion, such proposed threads would have to be closed after a suitable interval. Otherwise a new post at any time would bring the thread back with the official notice, giving the banned poster more attention and possibly confusing people (like any zombie thread).
