An invitation to a celebration, and a request for some advice.

After many long, frustrating months I finally managed to accumulate an application package that weighed as much as I do, and I have been selected into the Air Force Nursing Corps as of last week.

I’ll be holding my commissioning ceremony on Lexington Green, MA, on the 26th of July, and I’d like to issue an open invitation to any Dopers who would like to come. This board has been a real source of strength and inspiration for me in some very difficult times, and I’d love to include some Dopers in this day. I know it’s a long way out, but it’s going to include a reception, with all that entails, so if anyone thinks they’d like to come, it would be great to let me know as soon as possible.

Also, along with my selection I got my assignment, MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL. It would be great if anyone with any knowledge of that area had any advice for me, i.e. good nearby towns to live in, good school districts, etc.

Thanks again, Dopers.

Congratulations! Luck and happiness in the Corp. Alas, I cannot make it to the ceremony.

MA is Massachusetts, yes? Ouch. I’d love to be there with bunny in tow, but I think for now we’ll have to be vibing you (respectfully, platonically, and with hands clearly visible and er… yeah:D) from afar:)

snif You’re leaving? You can’t do that!

Well, yeah you can. [sub]Damn Air Force![/sub]

Dave and I will try to make it to your commissioning. Can’t make any promises, however. (It’s a bit close to Aaron’s birthday, and we’re planning to go down to Texas.)

Robin

Congrats, Lucretia!

Your ceremony’s on my birthday, too!

Thanks, guys, for the good wishes. Yes, MA is Massachusetts, 'punha. I’m sorry you two can’t be there. I’ll probably enjoy those vibes, though.

MsRobyn, I really hope you guys can come. It would mean a lot for you to be there.

Congratulations, Lucretia! Nurses kick ass, and Air Force nurses even more so. Best of luck.

Yes, Ma’am! No, Ma’am! I’ll get right on it, Ma’am!

(just trying to get you used to it)

WOOO-HOOO!!!

Now it won’t be fraternizing when you sit on my lap!

Woohoo! July might be a bad time for us, what with one thing and another, but if it ends up looking possible, we’ll give it a shot.

And when do you get sent to Tampa?

Yes, Serendipity, Air Force nurses do, indeed, kick ass. Thanks.

It never was fraternizing when I sat on your lap, UncleBill! Now, when Bluesman did it…

I really hope you two can be there, Geobabe. Gettting to Tampa…well, best case scenario, Bluesman and the Blueskids get there in August, and I join them in December. Worst case, the Blueskids and I get there in December, BLuesman gets there when he can.

Congratulations, Lucretia!!!

And you guys are headed for MacDill, too! This means (twirls moustache fiendishly) you ain’t seen the last of me, nyahaha!!

Lemme check with the spousal unit and see what she knows about good places to live. Her local knowledge may be somewhat dated, but we’ll see.

And I’ll mark the calendar for July 26, and I’ll see if we can make it. My wife’s never been up thataway.

I never thought I’d hear someone say that getting to Tampa in August would be good.

But seriously, Woohoo! Congratulations, and best wishes for a smooth and uneventful transition. I’ll miss the entire Bluesclan terribly.

Congratulations! I’ve enjoyed hanging out with you and Bluesman at the MAD events I’ve been to, and it’ll be a shame not to have that opportunity after July.

Mass. is a bit out of the way for me, however

I remember ybor city in Tampa as being quite a bit of fun if you’re ~18-21yrs old and crazy, but I’m not sure if I’d still feel the same way about it. When I was down there on that trip I was meeting up with some friends in Sarasota, which seemed like a nice enough place… sort of small and quiet compared to the surrounding area. But I don’t remember how close to Tampa it actually was, and I was only there for a few days.

Congrats, Lucretia! I’m not sure if we’ll be able to make it or not, but I’ll run it by Verrain and see what we can do.

As for Tampa, I’d say any of the suburbs north of the city (like Carrollwood) are really nice, as are some of the places in Pinellas County (though I’d stay away from living in St. Pete proper). Brandon, also, has it’s good parts and isn’t a terrible commute to MacDill.

Granted, my info is about 3 years out of date so someone may come in with better ideas, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask and I’ll answer what I can.

Thanks for the congratulations and the Tampa advice. I hope you and Verain can make it TruePisces.

So, you make it down there on a regular basis, RT? Cool!

We will definitely miss you, Anita. TeleTronOne, you just need to show up to as many Dopefests as you can between now and then!

Well, I e-mailed my mother and explained the deal. I suggested that she could get herself (and my dad) to PA for Aaron’s birthday.

She’ll think about it. So, it’s still up in the air, but we’ll figure out a way to be there.

Robin

That’s wonderful to hear. I don’t want to miss out on a salute from Airman Doors!

Congrats! I visited a friend in Temple Terrace last time I was there and it seemed like a very nice neighborhood. Don’t move to Pinellas county, as the commute would be into the sun both ways, and nobody likes that. Brandon might also be a decent alternative. I don’t know any of the south Tampa neighborhoods near MacDill, but that doesn’t mean that no good ones exist.

The in-laws live in Plant City, which is where Mrs.F. grew up, so we’re down there a couple times a year, minimum.

We should do a Dopefest during Strawberry Festival next year.

Man, you and your strawberries. Beyond that there is very little reason to go to Plant City.
