An old bug resurfaces

Forgive me for piling on an already busy staff, but there are threads that are not updating in terms of who the last poster was. I have heard before, I believe, that the explanation is that “it takes time” to update that data. The only problem is that that cannot be true. That piece of data ought to update at the same time as the post is made.

What is happening is that a thread in this state — one that has not updated in terms of the last poster appearing on the forum listing — will eventually update only when the next poster has added something.

If you catch it in time, you can see it in this thread, The Aesthetical Jesus, Part III. It shows Mr. Dibble as the last poster on the forum index, but in fact the last poster was I. And it will not change no matter how long we wait until someone else posts after me.

Just a report, for what it may be worth.

The system DOES update – but not always contemporaneously with the new post or new thread. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to catch up with itself.

Looking at the index page for Great Debates I find this:

Sometimes the system updates faster than at other times – depending on usage. When it’s the middle of the night USA time and there’s not a thousand users on the board things go faster. When there’s a lot more going on, it takes longer. You can choose to believe this or not but that’s what happens.
