As the prowd rider of a Aprillia Habana 50cc Scooter, let me weigh in behind Jjimm here.
I think this is certainly a Dublin thing.
Most of the shit I get off drivers are from Mercedes drivers, and drivers of other expensive cars.
However, all drivers annoy me, be they boy racers that endanger my life, to Mercedes drivers that believe that the rules of the road were not intended for them.
Q.E.D. All Car drivers suck.
Sorry to take a while getting back – things got busy. lieu said
Actually, I was breezing along doing a cool 65 or so just like the truck ahead of me and enjoying the road trip when I faced the possibility of no longer needing my health insurance. Oh, and macro man, the old yellow Geo would do 70 through the mountains of West Virginia, and not just on the downhills or with a tailwind. Of course, it did take her a while to get there.
I also realize shuttle service isn’t the same as a loaner, but the Hyundai’s the first new car I’ve bought, and I was impressed. Sorry for the lame comeback.
Pshaw. I think they’re nice cars; I don’t covet them, nor envy their owners (deliriously happy with my humble Ford Focus).
Socioeconomic bias? Well maybe. But also (I have been told) around 20 years ago, the licensing authority in Dublin had such a backlog of people waiting to take their tests that they had to grant an amnesty. They gave 20,000 people their licenses without them having sat a written or practical driving test… Most of those people would now be around 36-40 years old, and (IMO) many would therefore be in the age bracket most likely to be able to afford a more expensive car.
I drive a Mercedes and I am actually a very courteous driver. Give plenty of distance between myself and the car in front of me, use signals. What I can’t stand are the assholes that insist on entering the lane they know is going to end or inching in to the polite gap I’ve given between my hood and the car in front of me. I believe I deserve courtesy in return because of how I drive and not because I drive a well engineered vehicle.
I would suggest the biggest jerks on the road drive the Prius. They who insist on using electric power only - it is unsafe not to accelerate at a normal rate. Stop being afraid of using a little gas - you are fuel efficient enough already. I’m so sick of these Prius driving idiots who think it is their right to manage the speed of traffic - or pulling out in front of you and then accelerating so slowly as to ensure their Eco gauge still reflects favorable Eco friendly driving behavior. The Prius should be banned - I would like to use the 3 pointed star on my hood as a sight to align the Prius as a target!
As far as the Mini Cooper - well I just feel sorry for them. These are sad individuals who can’t afford a real BMW - so they but a Mini and tell their friends it’s made by BMW. May be true, but it ISN’T a BMW. You are driving a piece of shit that looks like a clown car. Those stupid racing stripes painted on your tiny car do not make it fast or sporty, sorry about the bad news.
And don’t even get me started about bicyclists who think they own the road. Yes ass hole you may have the legal right to ride on the road but you also have the legal responsibility to follow the same rules an automobile driver does. If you act like an asshole and cut in and out of traffic or ride through red lights and I hit you I pretty much know I will be charged - unless there is a cop who has common sense which I rarely find to be the case.
So, in summary, assholes can be found in any vehicles. I’ve never met a Prius driver I liked - I’m sure there are some decent ones out there. Sounds like you guys are in the same boat with the Mercedes. There are a few of us left who aren’t assholes but I would tend to agree that mean who share my vehicle preference are asshole jerks. I won’t give up my favorite brand because of the stereotype. I will just keep driving responsibly - after being rear ended twice by someone not paying attention, I have learned my lesson about being a safe driver.
Turn signals exist to let other drivers know what you’re doing. When other drivers know what you’re doing, they’re less likely to HIT you. This is a good thing.
