A cool feature of the stats page you may not have noticed:
You can go to this page: http://70.84.17.164/css-stats/server.php to check real time server status, to see if a game is going or whatever without having to open up the game.

I have a couple of questions:
[1] I haven’t played CS in ages, and not much in the way of twitch FPS except a little HL2 over the past 2 days. I’ve never played CS:S. Anything I need to know?
[2] Would you guys mind having a dedicated bullet catcher playing. I imagine I can only catch about 1 to 3 a round, but I catch them real well.
[3] Assuming you don’t mind a bullet catcher, can I get simplified details on connecting to a SDMB server? Can I connect when no one is active to download any needed maps and tool around them so I’m not always the first to die?
Thanks.
D_Odds, pretty much everybody is cannon fodder when they start. It took me far too much time to get to point where I kill more than I die. Even still, I have some days where nothing works and I’ll have 1 kill to 4 or 5 deaths. Then something will click and I’ll take out 4 or 5 enemy bastards in one round. In short, come on in and don’t get discouraged when you spend a lot of time watching what everyone else is doing (that is helpful to learn some stratagy). Also, unlike the original CS, you can mess around with all sorts of different weapons, so try them all out and get used to what they can and can’t do.
Nope, plays the same way pretty much.
Of course not, everyone is welcome. Most of us are bullet catchers ourselves.
Search for “1920s Style Death Rays” in your server browser, or enable the developer’s console in the options, open them, and type “connect 70.84.17.164”.
Easiest way to do it is probably to find the server by name, then add it to your favorites list, then use the favorites tab to connect to it in the future.
Don’t forget to wear an [SDMB] tag on your name. It’s not a clan thing, it’s just nice to be able to identify ourselves.
I used to consider that a good day in CS. I wasn’t very good, or everyone else was freakishly good.
Or they cheat and use speed hacks or aim-bots.
D_Odds, there’s a very good reason my CS:S nickname incorporates the words “cannon fodder”. Feel free to join the rest of us bullet catchers. One thing I will say about the SDMB CS:S server - it seems all the “you suxx0r, fag” weenies don’t stick around very long. I like that. I like it a lot.
Also, I got a copy of counter-strike: condition zero free with my new video card. I’ve found that playing it has helped a LOT when it comes to learning maps, not to mention figuring out how to aim. You can set the bots up so they can only use certain weapons, eg knives only (this gives you time to aim, heh).
The AI players are kinda funny too. On one map, I killed all the baddies in a row, and one of the AI players got on the radio and yelled “OWNED!”. Funniest thing ever!
Max.
I just finished up my ingenious new spray.
I’ll be around to play later tonight. Pop on whenever if anyone wants to get a game going.
Senor, the stats page kicks ass. Thanks for all the work (esp. searching) to set that up. I’m happy to see that my Kill/Death ratio is positive (ohh, ever so slightly).
Also,an offer to everyone: if you are playing on the server and there is a total jackass in there (as there have been a few times before), and SenorBeef or I am not there PLEASE feel free to send me an instant message (I leave my computer on 24/7). Even if I can’t play at the moment, I’ll be happy to come in and get rid of the fucktards.
Jayrotsky [on AIM].
I also have a MSN Messenger name as well (just let me know and I’ll tell you it).
Rock On!
btw, watch out for Inle-Rah and his pump shotty!
Unfortunately the above only goes for non-work hours. (that would be anytime other than 8-5PST M-F). I haven’t yet been able to convince my IT department to let me install Steam on my work PC!
They don’t seem to mind me reading the SDMB, though. Like right now!
Game? Pop on… I’ll check the console every few minutes and join you.
I went in and nobody’s playing
Has anyone noticed that the kill counter in-game doesn’t seem to count all of your kills? Last night I got 3 kills right off the bat (then died continuously thereafter) but the game only scored one for me. They all showed up on the top of the screen as my kills though. I’ll check some more tonight, maybe it’s just me. I really suck, so I’d like every score to count.
I popped in after the football game but there was nobody playing. I had to resort to playing CS:CZ with many bots. It is just as well that I wasn’t playing on line since I was drunk and not doing very well.
How about a new game sometime this week/weekend? I really want to kill some SDMB members
I mean kill in counter-strike, not for real. I do not at present wish to kill any human being. Granted, this should be obvious from the context of this thread but one can never be too careful in these times of rampant political correctness.
Seems like the server has been empty the last couple of days (at least when I’m checking). Anyone want to play in the evenings (Pacific time) this week?
There’s been sporadic play here and there. Some people seem to just lurk, waiting for someone else to join. I’ve been getting online mostly between 11am and 2pm Australian Eastern Standard Time (GMT +10), and between 7pm and 10pm. Once I go back to work this will revert to only between 7pm and 10pm. And akifani, I would love to kill you too I’ll definitely be there this weekend.
Max.
I put up a second HL2 server, this one DM, if anyone is interested. Same address, port 27016.
Anyone interested in a game on either server?
I have more fun with HL2 DM than with CS, but that’s just because the playing field seems a bit more level (skill-wise, that is).
OT: woot! number 1,000!
I like the concept of DM (not least of which is that once I die I can respawn straight away), but the weapons are just… un-cool. Except the toilet-grabbing gun. That’s pretty cool!
Counter-strike deathmatch: Yeh baby!!!
Max.
