An SDMB server: calling all Counter-Strike:Source players!

Based on the offer from SenorBeefto set up a game server for the SDMB, I’d like to suggest that we organize a game of Counter-Strike: Source.

Pulling a date almost completely out of my ass, how about this Sunday evening (11/21). I think Senor can just set up the server to run permanently so that anyone can drop in at any point. However, since this would probably yield to few players to play an adequate game, we can schedule a time to all “meet” there.

Anyone interested? Please post to this thread and we’ll try to hash out some of the details.

Oh, and it should go without saying that you certainly don’t have to be good to come play. This is the SDMB, even if we fight igorance with a Desert Eagle.

I will be happy to join in the mayhem anytime around 8pm Eastern, and if I’m real good, my fiancee will let me stay up until 11. Server name, password? Just for the record, I typically run about a 1:3 kill ratio (that is, I get shot in the face three times before managing to survive my first encounter with the enemy). I’m good for hiding behind, though, and I’m an absolute demon at “suicidally stupid… but it worked”.

flash BANG!

I can play Sunday night, for a a couple hours - just need the password & server name.

I’m up for some CS:S on Sunday night, but I won’t get back until 10:15 PM Central time. So if anyone might still be up and playing, I’ll join.

I’d play. I’d be in the “no good” category though - I enjoy FPS’s, but tend to become a button-masher when things get hectic, start spinning in circles, randomly jumping or crouching, spraying rockets and bullets in all directions.

Never played CS, I’m assuming it’s pretty straightforward on how to find and log in to a specific server?

Cool, we’d be glad to have you. When we figure out more of the specifics they’ll be put here. I’ll even do a quick step-by-step on how to connect to the server (manually add it) for those not entirely familiar.

The thing about CS is that it’s considered a pretty realistic tactical shooter, which makes it fairly unforgiving. However, your bullets kill just the same as mine do so even beginners can be deadly. Probably the biggest deal is learning the layout of the maps (though fairly intuitive I’d say, comparatively). You don’t have to hit someone accurately with 7 rockets to kill them – it only takes 1. As a matter of fact, there aren’t even rockets. :stuck_out_tongue:

This sounds like a lot of fun. I’m probably busy til 6 pst or so at the very earliest, but I’ll drop in and see if anybody’s around when I get there. It should be noted, though, that flashbang grenades make me shoot BETTER.

Does anyone know where I might find the cs:source dedicated server program? I’m having a hard time finding it.

Ok, it appears I have found it. It’s pretty well hidden and not easy to use, but I should have it up and running soon.

I haven’t been in any of the HL2 threads because I’ve been busy playing HL2.

I finished yesterday and have been playing CS:S on and off. CS has never excited me but I have this shiny new toy! (I hope they come out with TF2 on Source.) I’m still quite the newbie, but I’d love to play if we get a server going.

Do we have a server name or a password yet? There’s no way to search for server names other than to sort alphabetically, and I’ve already looked for “SDMB”, “Fighting Ignorance,” “Uncle Cecil,” and “1920’s Style Death Ray”. I’m going to get a shower, but if y’all aren’t on a server when I get back, I’ll set one up with SDMB at the beginning of the server name, and “Cecil” as a password.

I didn’t set the server up yet… I will soon. I need to make a maplist and some basic server settings and get it going.

If anyone wants to contact me for details, senorbeef at yahoo messenger, senorbeef00 on aim

Ok, the server is currently up and in private mode. Server “1920s Style Death Rays”, password cecil. I don’t know when people are showing up exactly… and I could make it public to get a game going if only a few people show up…

I can’t find it on the game list for some reason…

You can connect to it manually by:

Go into the options… it’s under one of the advanced tabs, select “enable developer’s console” or launch the game with a -console parameter.

Then hit ~ in game to open the console. Type “password cecil” and then “connect bf3.cc42.com” (that’s a link to my server from my bf1942 clan)

Ok, everything is up and running correctly. You’ll find the server in the games list where the games that start with numbers are… after funky characters like # and such. Or you can manually connect under the method I just said.

So we don’t have people coming and going one at a time, let’s set a specific time to aim for.

Let’s aim for 9pm eastern. Show up on the server then, and hopefully we’ll have enough people for a game. If it doesn’t work out, we can try some other night, as I’ve got all the server stuff configured correctly.

Also, if we only get a handful of SDMB players, we could all put [SDMB] in our names to identify ourselves then I could open the game up to the public.

Well the we’re playing right now. Anyone who’s interested – come on in!

Probably the easiest way is to add “bf3.cc42.com” in your Favorites list in Steam. No console needed!

See you there!

I notice a few SDMB guys came and left… not sure why. I have the server more properly configured now so please come on back.

Got a strong game going now.

Its a not a good time? Or also, maybe some of the newer players were a bit frustrated? I know that happened to me before.

That was my first time playing CS ever. Boy did I get killed a lot.
