Any ideas for an SDMB game server?

I’m renting a very powerful server with a ton of bandwidth that I can host games on. I was thinking that perhaps if there were a lot of SDMB players of a particular game, I could run a server for it and we could all play there and have an sdmb community thing going on.

Currently I mostly run bf1942/desert combat servers, and I’m not sure if we have many players for that game here, but if you have any ideas or suggestions as to what we could get going, feel free to post them.

If you end up doing this, I’ll gladly reinstall BF1942/DC and join in the mayhem.

Yeah, a 1942 server would be easy if a lot of SDMBers played it because I already have it all set up… but I can run any game that has a dedicated server program, so I’m open to ideas.

Hmm. The only multiplayer games I play are Far Cry and Unreal Tournament. Not sure if they are viable options though.

I play Unreal Tournament too (2004)

Although lately it doesn’t seem to have the variety it had months ago. Lately it’s the same old levels and the same old me-being-crapper-than-everyone-else-ness.

Months ago it was all new and exciting and I could do ecstatically funny things to my enemies.

How about an SDMB game?

Who banned charter member X? It was **Lynn Bodoni ** in MPSIMS because of trolling tactics.

We could draw community cards: You have been found logically lacking in GD. Go to The BBQ Pit. Go straight to the BBQ Pit. Do not pass IMHO.

I play Quake 2 and 3.

Old school, I know.

Well, #straightdope could use it’s own IRC server. Undernet, while still not as bad as EFNet, still sucks.

Whatever game is chosen, it must involve 1920s Style Death Rays, and pie.

I think you and High cheese need to get together and brainstorm this out. I sense the embryonic beginning of a game I would happily plunk down $15 to play…

      • I have bought UT-2004 and noticed also–there does not seem to be the variety of home-made maps available, even though the map editor is (really) easier to use than ever. Most servers are just running the regular maps that came with the game.
  • I have a theory that says that most of these “true-enthusiast” servers were run by US tech workers who have fallen on hard financial times, and so cannot afford to operate a server with large bandwidth costs (downloading game maps).

My vote is for Counter-Strike Source. I know it could be a bit limiting because you’ve gotta buy the brand new Half-Life 2 (it goes without saying that it’s totally worth it).

If you can get a CS:S server set up, I’ll start a new thread in Cafe Society (whoops, almost abreviated that CS) to recruit people and try to organize a game time. Sorta like a did once upon a time ago. This weekend looks pretty free for me.

I also play BF:V and Joint Operations. However, you’ve got to figure that we won’t really get all that many people. Personally I think 3v3 or 4v4 in Counter-Strike works well, but would be pretty lame in larger games like Battlefield.

Level 6: It’s 1960, and you have been ordered to take a submarine to the deepest part of the oceans and twiddle your thumbs for exactly 20 minutes before returning to the surface.

I’d be up for some CS:S. Of course, I’d have to practice first to avoid completely embarrassing myself.

Currently I play BF1942/DC and Pacific Fighters online. But if we get a good server going I’d be willing to try just about anything.

I’m interested as well.

I play UT2004, Unreal Tournament, Counter-strike (original), Neverwinter Nights, and Starcraft.

I also write levels for NWN and UT. I’m learning how to use UnrealEd for UT2003 levels, and I recently got into Celestia. I wanted the Star Trek ships, so I had to learn about modeling, texture mapping, and script writing to make my own ship models. I’m looking into building a mod for UT or UT2004, where they offer prizes for good mods.

I’d love to get in on the development end, since I have the time, skills, and computing power. The only thing I don’t have is a good server that can handle a lot of traffic.

For those of you who play Unreal Tournament 2004, here is a plan: meet me on the open servers any night during the week after 11 pm EST. I go by the name p$ycho_dad (given to me by my sons, after Al Bundy’s TV hero.) If someone posts here with a specific time to play, I’ll try to host a game for anyone who wants to have a private SDMB game, or arrange a meeting on one of the public servers.

Tell me what names you use and I’ll look for you online as well.

Level 6 sucks (excuse me, 1z teh suxx0rz) – you only get to play it once.

freeciv is an open-source implementation of Civilization with networked multiplayer support. The server will eat a decent amount of memory, but it is light on the CPU. Clients are available for various platforms. The game itself is highly addictive and can take many hours to finish. It has a active group of developers, so optimizations and new features are being added frequently. I don’t there are many players on the SDMB, but since the client is free, that could change quickly.

Other than that, Unreal Tournament would be my choice. A MUD would be cool, too.

I love Civ.

If you do manage to host any sort of SDMB game, let me know. I’ll play it! I may even buy the game

You provide the recruiting and organization and I’ll provide a quality game server, sound good?
