I’d posted in passing into another thread about the ability to host nearly any game in existance on a T1 line for use in clan games and pick up games as a way to get away from l337 l3wz0rx and play with people who, while they may kill you a lot, will at least type with the normal 26 letters of the alphabet.

I also posted my e-mail in there, which is currently dead as I have to reinstall my exchange server, so if you sent me something yesterday, it’ll be a while in getting to me. Agh.

I’m posting here to find out who wants to play, and what games. I know a lot of people want to play counter-strike, though games of Unreal Tournament, Tribes 2, Arcanum, Starcraft, Baldeur’s Gate (I and II) and pretty much any other game can be played on the net. Also, most mods are welcome, but please realize that some people will be downloading them on 56K so a few non-modded games will be in there too.

Once we find out who and what, we’ll work on the when.

I have Half-life, but never played Counter-Strike. I’ve tried Unreal Tournament, but installing it screwed up my video drivers for some reason, so I never really got to play. About the only on-line shooter-type I’ve ever played is Heretic II. Even joined a clan for a while before it imploded and developed something resembling a reputation :slight_smile:
I’m game, but as I said, my current collection is somewhat limited.

My favorite is UT–if you get a server going, I’ll definitely drop by.

I’m a firm believer in counterstrike bringing people together. Or, more accurately, bringing you together with my M249. I’m not as big of a fan of playing Baldur’s Gate online- it’s fun, but it’s too linear of a story for my tastes.

Keep me updated if a CS clan forms, though. I’ll do some UT action, but I moved on after years of hardcore playing.

I haven’t played many first-person games online due to only recently upgrading to DSL. I’d be up for Q3, Halflife/Counterstrike, and from what people are saying I should probably spring for Unreal: Tournament and Tribes: 2. Oh, and a new hard drive. And some more memory. And better speakers.

Let us know what comes up.

Alrighty, counter-strike seems to be easy enough, though we’ll need a few more than 4 people to get a proper match. I’d like to try a few rpgs too, as I think it’d be a lot of fun to actually go through BG or Arcanum with a few other people.

So, when are the people who wish to play counter-strike normally available? The server can be active at any time, but I personally am not available to play during the week until 11pm or so (eastern). The weekends are generally free for me, so long as I don’t have girlfriend duty.

So, lets get together a time for a little counter-strike and if you have a game that’s fun online that you want to play, post it and I’ll see if I have it.

Saturday and Sunday evenings work best for me. Sunday morning works too. I probably wouldn’t be available for more than one big session a weekend, though, lest my wife put a brick through my monitor.

I should clarify my statement about BG-

A few people forming a party and going through the game, start to finish, is fun. Randomly joining a BG netgame, wandering around, realizing “Man, I’ve done this chapter a hundred times already”, and so on, is less fun. In conclusion, I’d participate in a BG-type netgame if the intention is more than just “let’s kill an hour”.

Evenings and weekends are best for me. I only have a 28.8 dialup at home, so I’ll shamefully come into work so I can get a 40-50 ping.

Just to update, my e-mail is working, so if you want to send an e-mail to have a clan hosting or anything, feel free. My best day would be sunday afternoon, so lets get together a little counter-strike to start.

i was the one who practically orgasmed when you said you were doing a straight dope CS clan server… so, it’s definetly more than seven people who are interested.

i’m not l33t at all, though i am a self described autoshotgun bitch. i can snipe too, but i never AWP, unless i get someone with the steyr and they drop the AW/M.

and, of course, i just plain suck overall even though i love the game.

Well, actually getting this done isn’t a problem, and this weekend I’ll setup a server at counterstrike.gamer-vision.com so you can test it out and see how it runs for you. I’ll also put the 1.3 patch on my site so you can download it without having to wait 3 hours on file planet. A link will follow, once the server is active.

I can leave the counterstrike server up most of the time, and just not advertise it, so it’s much more private. We’ll work on getting a few groups together at certain times. Like I said, sunday afternoon is normally a great time for me.

Also, if anyone is familliar with setting up a CS server, I’ve never done it before, so any tips can help. Either e-mail me, or just post them here.

My tip is to turn friendly-fire on. For a game that prides itself on more realism than it’s competitors, it’s annoying to see a grenade land in a group of people but only injure those wearing a specific uniform.

Plus, it gives you reason to scream at the snipers who shoot at anything that moves, rather than paying attention to what’s going on. :slight_smile:

I posted in the Pit and mentioned this, so I’ll just repeat:

I’m looking for a game I can play using a satellite modem, if there are any. The lag time is high, in Zone terms its a built in lag of 400+.

I will be getting a new computer around Xmas, and I hope to be doing much more online gaming then.

I have 2 sons who would play as well.

Quake 2
Quake 2 (Lazarus Mod)
Diablo
Starcraft
Age of Empires

I write Quake 2 levels with and without the Lazarus elements, using QuArK. I’m still working on style, as I’ve been working on them for just eight months.

I’ve run D&D games (tabletop) for the past 21 years, and I started out playing wargames like Battle of the Bulge and Gettysburg.

I’m up for Counterstrike, UT, Q3 (also with the Urban Terror mod), Starcraft… and if you want, I can put a little effort into scrounging up money for Tribes 2, or just about anything else.

what exactly do I need to play counter strike? is it a mod for another game? whats the story here…oh yeah and i am up for tribes 2.

one question, are you all interested in makeing a clan/tibe/squad? if so do we put the {SD} infront or behind our names…consider it a poll

I am up for some Starcraft, Warcraft 2, or even perhaps Age of Empires. I really hate FPS, so if there is anyone else up for some of the other games, let me know.

For online games, I would highly recommend staying away from the satellite connections. I would get a dial up from a local provider. They normally have very low ping times and 56K is plenty fast if you’re not hosting a server. If that’s not an option, you might want to play online P&P style RPGs as seen on http://www.webrpg.com or even http://www.gamer-vision.com (the game server is a tabletop emulating program, lets you roll dice, do nice things like that).

If that’s not an option, go for RTSs (starcraft, age of empires) instead of the FPSs (quake, ut). They’re not as adversly effected by lag. Also, you may want to try Anarchy Online, as their servers are so lagged that you wouldn’t notice a difference between your satellite or a T1.

I try to avoid quake as I normally don’t like the physics or how it ‘feels’ at all. However, if Urban Terror is good, I’m willing to try it. Tribes 2 would be ok, I have that around somewhere, and that lets you make your own servers, so we’ll see about finding a time for Tribes.

What you need to play counter strike: Half Life, a game published by Sierra. It’s pretty old, so you should find it at a pretty low price. After you get Half-Life, you then need to download the counter strike mod, at http://www.counter-strike.net or over at my site once I actually get the file and make it active.

Also, as a clan, it’s up to you. Since it’s a private server, though, no need to make anything official yet unless another clan wants to play against us.

Well, FPS are easier for something like this because people can join at any time, but I’m willing to get beat down at starcraft :wink:

Tonight the counterstrike server is going up, if you want to practice or test it out. On sunday afternoon (2 or 3ish eastern ok?) we’ll actually get together for some fragging.

You guys might know if this is a problem…

I tried reinstalling Halflife last night, and it checked for updates for me. It found a 57 mb download, and I told it to download that sucker and went to bed. Got up this morning and told it to install the update, when it said something like, “You are trying to install the (extra blank space) language update to Halflife, when you have the English language version installed. This program will now hork up a hairball and die.”

What’s up with that? Is the update on the Opposing Forces CD? I’ll try installing that tonight, but if this is a Known Thing, I’d love to hear about it.

well, i have no idea what happened to you. maybe the program thought it was done half through, and the update is fucked for an ID protocol (because it’s a self contained .exe, and closed at the halfway mark).

ps; what version of halflife do you have now? that might have something to do with your problem. not likley, but maybe…

what’s the server’s name/IP address? i need some way to search it out… no school tomarrow, so i’d like to stay to the early hours of the morning CS-ing. with dopers amongst would be even better.

I’m all for a CS clan/server. I play quite a bit and could offer help to others (if someone wants a complete buying script just e-mail me). I like the friendly fire option but it should be off unless there is an admin there to ban repeat team killers. If any dopers wish to play with others you can go to http://www.gametiger.com select the game and search for player names that are connected. It will give the I.P. address and then you can join the game easier. Next time someone plays CS, my name is ** ][v][onkey ** look me up.
