Call Of Duty 4 (PC) SDMB multiplayer games

The other COD4 thread going got me interested in playing again.

So I figured out how to run a server, and got it configured. I have a 4 ghz cpu, 4 ghz ram, a 2Mbs upload cap, etc. so I should be able to easily adequately host games of 6-8 players.

If we can get 6 players together, that could be a 3v3 HQ and sabotage game. I actually find that the small HQ games playing with people you know, really trying to coordinate with voice chat, are among the most satisfying games. HQ mode focuses the action so that even with few players you end up in the same spots competing for the same objectives, and having a small teams means you can really get together and coordinate and not just have it be a chaotic spamfest.

So I’m proposing running a series of COD4 multiplayer games at certain prearranged times so we can all get together, if there’s enough interest. We can password the server so it’s just us, and we’ll have control over game mode, map, time limit, etc.

Since we’re coming up on a weekend, I’ll propose a game for saturday afternoon at 6pm eastern. That’ll give people over a day to see this thread… and hopefully that time period is good. If we get a lot of interest, maybe we could do it this evening. But for now, plan for saturday at 6pm if you’re interested in available.

And if you can, if you have headsets/microphones try to make sure they’re properly configured. Having voice chat available dramatically improves the experience (even though for some reason on pub servers no one ever uses the in-game voic echat).

If you like this idea, go ahead and post that you’d like to play, when the best times are available to you, your favorite game modes, etc.

Rockin’! I’m in. gonna try and get some practice in tonight.

I would like to play but I need to get my chat thing squared away (if we indeed have to use it).

I’m interested but will be out of town this weekend. Have fun guys!

My timing is impeccable. After my computer has had 0 downtime since I built it, I accidentally unplugged in mid operation which has rendered it unbootable. Trying to figure out now what the problem is. I’ll post an update if I get it working again.

Ooo. Haven’t touched CoD4 in some time…

I’m in!

Yeah I have to re-download it from steam tonight.

::utters a prayer to the great capacitor in the sky::

Oh blessed capacitor in the sky who so shockeths us in your eternal wisdom. I entrust SenorBeef’s PC into your all-mighty transistory hands, that it may recuperate from it’s malady in time for some righteous COD4 action. In the name of the blue-screen, the stack overflow, and nvlddmkm.sys error, amen.

Psu works but comp still won’t POST wheeee
Fried CPU? Mobo? Don’t have spares to test…

Well, shit. If you can walk me through hosting a game, I suppose I could do it at some point. My system and internet connection are very similar to yours.

I can make it this coming Wednesday or Thursday evenings, otherwise 2nd shift times are a no-go. Hit me up on Steam if you see me on there Mr. Beef. I need to get in and defend my usual 74/20 kill:death ratio on headquarters.

Hardware failures just from unplugging your box? I suppose it’s possible… Do you get any fan action when powering on, or does it just sit like Stonehenge?

I’ll keep your mobo in my thoughts, SenorBeef.

Have any room for a complete noob (as in, I’d just be starting). I’m not a total stranger to FPS games but they’re more of the Unreal/Quake variety than the CoD/Battlefield type.

Senor Beef, I had a similar issue with my old computer. It locked up and I couldn’t restart it normally or with the power button, so I had to yank the cord.

Fried my power supply.

Can’t talk much now. Backup computer in pieces, posting from iPod
If you want full details I posted a thread on overcoock.net in the power supply section

I’ll be happy to host as well if Senor Beef can’t get his rig up and running in time. I’ve got an i7 quad core and 6 gigs of RAM so I should be ok for hosting a decently sized group.

More important than the hardware is your upload rate… most capable gaming computers will come up short on bandwidth before computer power when hosting a server. If you can reliably upload at, I dunno, 50K/s you should be able to host a 5-8 player game. That’s generalizing from my past experience and not cod4 specifically.

I’m not optimistic about having my computer up today, maybe tomorrow. If someone wants to host a game, you run the iw3mp.exe with various switches, the most important being +dedicated 2. If you google “iw3mp.exe +dedicated 2” you should be able to find some guides to setting it up. I’m crazy busy today so I can’t explain everything ATM.

You could also agree to play on the same public server at the same time, but that way you can’t keep outsiders out. You’ll want to find a server with the ability to call votes, so you can vote to change the map/gametype. I’d recommend finding a small (8-10 players maybe) server since if you end up with 5 people in a 30+ server you’d only occasionally run into each other by coincidence, rather than regularly coordinating together.

Well, I’m at the point where I need spares to isolate the problem further. Except I don’t have access to any computers with compatable hardware.

So now I go through the process of taking a guess and buying replacement parts. And if I’m wrong, I just wasted that money and have to buy a new part… and money is tight ATM. whee.

What shitty timing. That blows.

Give me a break.

Edit: To clarify for others who may read this, his post was probably not sincere.

Well, I just saw the thread and I guess missed the game.
No biggie since my desktop had the HD with the OS crap out. I would be interested once I get back up and running on my gaming machine…
