An SDMB server: calling all Counter-Strike:Source players!

OMG NOOB ALERT

Don’t worry - it’s intimidating at first, but most people catch on pretty quick. It just takes a little while to get used to the interface and knowing what to buy and where to go.

Yeah I’d say knowing the maps is the most important thing. You learn where to expect a “confrontation” assuming both sides are rushing. IOW, the choke points.

Good fun though.

Well that was fun, had about 12 SDMB members in there at one point or another. We should organize something later in the week.

I was on for a short time, but I’ve been sick all weekend so was really too tired to play. But it was fun, and thanks for organizing. I’ll definitely play again sometime (although can’t this week as I’m travelling for Thanksgiving).

Tons of fun, all! Thanks for the good time and the good kills. Knowing the map is a big part of your skill, so n00bs shouldn’t fret. I’ll definitely add the server to my favorites.

I haven’t had time to experiment with all of the weapons yet, or even stand by a wall and fire a clip into each brick; are there any guns that I should be avoiding because of bad accuracy or crappy stopping power?

Do you want to have a regular CS, Day of Defeat or Team Fortress server?

I don’t know if they changed the guns in CS:source but on regular CS the galil, AK-47 and FAMAS have horrible long range accuracy. The AK-47 is ok if you fire it in a really slow fashion but once you hold down the trigger it goes everywhere.

Most of the sub-machine guns suck except the MP5. The MP5 has the best mid and long range accuracy, so if you play on an experienced server you will notice that 90% of the time when people buy a submachine gun they will buy the MP5 and not an Uzi, Mac-10, P90, etc.

In fact, the majority of the time people only use about 5 different guns. The MP5, Desert eagle, colt, AK-47 and AWP.

Well, I won’t be playing CS:S until next year, so someone set a reminder for early January.

Incidentally, if you don’t know much about CS, this may be really confusing to you, because on the retail version of CS:S the names are all different. This site claims to have a fix, which I haven’t yet tried. In the meantime, here’s a quick translation:

MP5 – KM SMG
Desert Eagle – Night Hawk .50C
AK-47 – CV-47
AWP – Magnum Sniper Rifle

I can’t figure out what the Colt became.

–p

Thanks for the heads up. I installed the patch and here are the names of the weapons before the fix (retail), and after:

If anyone wants to get a few people together to start a game spontaneously sometime, we can get in contact by AIM or yahoo messenger or msn or whatever (use trillian).

Whoever is interested in that contact me at senorbeef00 on aim or senorbeef on yahoo.

Anyone interested in a 9pm eastern game tonight? Get it in before the holidays…

I’ll play if I can. I don’t get home from work until about 8:30 eastern.

Jayrot, since I’m too lazy, I’m appointing you Official Organizer Guy if you so desire. It’d be cool if we got organized with a mailing list or something of our regular players to coordinate games and such.

No problem, I’m happy to be the O.O.G… I’m still grateful you’re able to provide the dedicated server!

Hey guys…I got home, saw the replies and joined the server at about 8:45 PM Central. No one home.

Probably a good thing since I don’t know any of the CS maps. Hopefully that will change over the long weekend!

Just seeing an empty server. It’s not password protected though, at least that I can see, so why aren’t there random pickup people in there?

Other than pilot no one ended up showing up. I kept an eye on the server console to talk to people when they joined, but… not much of a show.

As far as random pickup people… people typically don’t join an empty server. If we got 3-4 SDMB guys playing, though, it quickly fills up. We need that seed to start a game… it grows pretty fast from there.

Why don’t you join a pre-existing server with maybe 16/32 player then after you get 6-8 SD members take them somewhere to start your own server. That way you wouldn’t have the problem of people coming then leaving.

Not a bad idea, but that can add a little extra confusion to the meeting. It works fairly well when we have a bunch of people agree to a specific time… sunday night we had a total of 12 (?) sdmb players and about 7-8 at once for a while.
