And ______ was his name-o

Once we get settled in our new house, the Mullinatrix and I will be getting a dog, specifically a golden lab. At this point, we are debating over the name of the dog. This is sure to spark debate and quarrels within our happy home for years to come, so I have decided to give the SDMB community a chance to speak your collective minds regarding the pending puppy pronoun.

My wife and I each have 2 choices we are narrowed down to, but write in votes are accepted. If a groundswell of support develops for a name we will consider it. The voting options are (in no particular order):

  1. Rebound
  2. Einstein
  3. Edison
  4. Reagan
  5. Write in ________

So, fulfill your civic duties. Step into the booth and punch my ballot.

How about Bob?

Nobody names their dog Bob.

I’ve said it before on the last thread about naming dogs but I still think “Noodles” is a really cool name for a dog.

How about Achilles?

Then you can say “Achilles Heel!!”

Well, none of them sound very warm and fuzzy for a puppy.
How about ‘schnugums’?

Oh, well. Out of your choices listed, Einstein is the best.

Steven Right(sp?) has a great name for a dog – Stay.

“Come here, Stay. . . Come HERE, Stay!”

Keep calling the dog until it finally has a nervous breakdown.

I’ve always named my pets after literary heroes.
Therefore you could have:
Thoreau - “Row”
Emerson - “Emie”
Whitman - “Whit”

ect.

What are you heroes ?

Do not perpetuate the myth that he was this oh-so-great inventor that revolutionized electricity, the light bulb, or anything else. Did you know that he advocated DC power, said AC would never ever work and that people who believed AC was the way to go were insane, and he went around publicly electrocuting dogs to prove his point? Dogs, man! Don’t burden your Golden with that kind of legacy.

Name him Tesla instead - cool name, plus you might educate people.

Tesla, or Sulla. As in Lucius Cornelius. Pronounced Soo-la.

Reagan would be cool, too.

Mrs. Southern and I are also considering a dog to go with the new we’ll occupy in the next couple of weeks. Our dilema is deciding on an indoor or outdoor type of dog.

What’s the age of the Lab you’re going to acquire?

  1. If the dog is particularly playful, or you expect to teach it to play basketball, frisbee, etc then Rebound is a wonderful choice. Otherwise stay away from the name.

  2. Too cliche. Everyone remembers “Back to the Future”.

  3. Somewhat obtuse. But clever. I like it.

  4. It’ll certainly get you talked about. But I approve of this one as well.

SouthernStyle

I second this nomination. These are good names for a dog, plus the dog actually listens to the sound you are making, he doesn’t really know English. Both of these names make distintive sounds that the dog can recognize as his name. FYI, in many of the training books and articles I have read, a vowel sound on the end of the name is recommended.

Not Reagan!! I think it is just too much like a president and so many other things!! I think Einstein is kinda cool. But, what about the personality of the dog? Can you name him/her before you even know what he/she is like? Or have you met the new member of your family??

Ya think?

How about Werther’s, like the butterscotch candy?

I give my support for Tesla. What a cool name for a dog even if I hated the band, Tesla.

Personally, I can’t name the animal until I see their personality. My mother has a ton of cats and all the ones she gave the nice names to like Angel et all tend to have the exact opposite personality. Along those lines, if you name your dog Einstein, he will be dumb as post yet somehow manages to not forget to do all the stupid things that irritate you and your wife. (I like the name but wouldn’t name him it without seeing the personality of the animal.)

HUGS!

Rebound is a great name, again, if the dog is active. Einstein ain’t half bad either. Shitcan both Edison and Reagan, those suck.

Fidonator

I like the Tesla idea, along with my own write in canadate, Browser. I know, tacky and trendy, but imagine the fun…

“Fetch Browser!”

Fido
Rover
Scamp
Butch
Rex
Spot
Lassie
Rin Tin Tin
Mephistopheles

I would have to can the name of Tesla. I personally like the name, but I don’t feel like explaining the name being related to a scientist instead of a band that isn’t very good.

When I first saw the subject line I thought we had yet another “creative” troll.

Don’t can Telsa, Mully.
That’s a really cool name!
But if you must, my vote is for Rebound. Puppies are so full of energy. I can see this one bouncing off the walls.
