Lots more you’ll probably see in coming days. While PRI reigned (and it’s hardly as if they’ve disappeared), Mexico remained relatively stable, but that stability was accompanied by an encrustation of endemic corruption, Can the new guys break the mold, or is it a case of meet the new boss, same as the old boss? I would like to see Mexico shake that skeleton, but I am familiar with it, and it runs deep. Manny of the low level functionaries who represent the basest levels of corruption are on whose side?
Sure, they can do it, but it’ll take a concerted effort. Making sure the military is happy would be a good first idea. I think the most effective change they could make would be to drop the limits on wages that keep most Mexicans poor. When GM built its last plant in Mexico, the Mexican government made them lower the wages they wanted to pay to the workers. True! The (former) ruling party has laws in place to keep themselves rich at everyone else’s expense.
