? and the Mysterians

Does anyone remember a song from back in the 60s called “96 Tears”? It was recorded by a group called ? and the Mysterians.
The identity of ? was a big mystery, and various guesses were made, but I never knew if his identity was ever made known to the teeming millions or not. He was supposed to be a singer from one of the popular bands of that time. Among the possibilities was Eric Burdon of the Animals, but that is the only one I can remember.
Hearing the song on an oldies radio station the other day revived my interest in the subject. Help, anyone?

According to this guy, ? & the Mysterians Fan , Question Mark’s real name is Rudy Martinez - not a name I’m familiar with.

I’ll just cry…

I should’ve known there would be a website! So much for the notion it was someone famous. Thanks aseymayo.

? and the Mysterians were all Mexican-Americans who first achieved success in Michigan. Though ? refuses to confirm or deny that his real name is Rudy Martinez, numerous sources (including the Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll) indicate that it is. In any case, “R. Martinez” is listed as the songwriter on the record “96 Tears.”

GuanoLad:

Actually, I liked “Stingray” better.

Man, those Andersons really knew how to put a program together.

(Actually, I am a big fan of “UFO,” too.)
