So I’ve finally managed to make up my mind about grad school. I’ve interviewed, visited, talked to anyone and everyone, and finally made up my mind. I’m going to UC Davis this fall (well, I’m moving in the summer). I’m so relieved that I hated Berkeley (no offense to anyone from there, it just wasn’t my cup of tea). Anyway, I just wanted to shout it from the rooftops.
Wooo! Welcome to the D-town. Watch out for crazy ducks and bikers.
be forewarned, during the winter you won’t see the sun for at least 3 months straight.
Hope you’ve got a nice bike. Good luck and have fun!
Except for those insane occasions where you wake up to a 40 degree day, dress warmly, only to have all traces of fog and rain burn off in a 10 second period at about 11am, flooding the city in a blinding 70 degree light that can easily be mistaken for either the Rapture or nuclear warfare.
Congrats & good choice, gfloyd! Do I recall correctly that you’re in o-chem? If you’re involved in the TA business, you could well cross paths with my daughter next year as a student.
And I don’t remember going more than 3 weeks without seeing the sun. Besides, an hour drive either direction will get you above the fog if you need to remember what the sun looks like.
I’m from New England, I can remember times when it felt like we didn’t see the sun from September to May. I’m an organic chemist and will be TAing all next year, in what I’m not sure yet.
I’ve got a bike, but it needs new break pads and lights. Before I visited there, I never thought about looking both ways before I crossed a street and actually had to worry about bicycles.
I have a friend who may be taking ochem next year. Any chance I can bribe you with beer or other consumables?
(Davis BS '00 MS '03 checking in)
Congrats, and welcome! Get a bike, and remember that fenders are not really optional. (Biking through a puddle without fenders results in an effect we seasoned hands like to call “the freshman stripe”.) And don’t drink and bike, lest you get the dreaded BUI.
Remember: half-price coffee at the Coffee House during finals week.
Don’t brake for ducks; it only encourages them.
And beware of the cum trees near the medical buildings (near/past Tercero dorms).
P.S. Don’t hurt the duckies! Especially the baby duckies during the spring!!
And now I’m trying to find an apartment. Any advice?
I’m really happy for you, but will miss you incredibly
dang, I forgot all about those moments…and they really happen too.
You’re lucky my SO and I just went through this!
If you happen to be in the area, there are housing booklets all over - I saw tons in Hart Hall yesterday. If you’re not, check this out (though it’s not nearly as accurate): www.davishousing.com. It’s actually better to not specify anything, and look at every apartment complex.
Important things to know:
- the most frequent bus lines are G, W, (which run about every 20-30 min) then basically everything else, you can check the bus lines online and see how far your apartment is from campus on http://unitrans.ucdavis.edu (that’s the site that’s listed on the UC Davis website…but it doesn’t seem to be working right now o.O )
- south Davis is the nicest part of Davis (apartment-wise), but it’s more $
- north is okay
- I’ve heard west is a bit ghetto, and east is meh
- I’m pretty sure that the markets are also on the
Oh, one place we were looking at was called Atrium something…it’s really nice housing specifically for grad students. I suggest that you check it out.
Otherwise, you could chance it and look on craiglist :dubious:
Hope this helped!
I have the Davis housing booklet from last year. My evening plans envolve calling all of the places with studios. I’ve also been looking an craiglist.
Haha I meant to say I’m pretty sure that the markets are shown on the bus route map that’s online.
I live in Pinecrest Apartments. They’re ok. I’d stay away from Ivy Towne Apartments.
