I’ve noticed at least 2 people mention Davis in threads, plus my Doper Valentine card (yes, I’ve been to the Sushi place:)) in which a Doper mentioned having a friend who lived on my street.
So how many Dopers either live in Davis now, or did at one point? Extra points if you attended UCD.
Do Doper regu-lurkers count? I lived in Davis from 1998 to 2002, while attending grad school at UCD. I love Davis, and still visit regularly as my boyfriend resides in Woodland. The only reason I left is because I wanted to buy a house, and there was no way I could afford one in Davis, so I moved about 100 miles south.
One of my few posts on the SDMB was giving tips on all-weather bicycling to work, and included the ever popular Davis fashion of the plastic grocery bag on the seat during the rainy season.
I’m very much looking forward to sharing Picnic Day with the boyfriend on April 16(the hands-on cadaver and the horse breeding demonstration especially), and if all goes well, 4th of July in the park.
I wuz on the 6 year plan. Started in 1979, took a year off to go to Taiwan, and graduated in 1985. General Manager for KDVS in the 84-85 school year. Knew pretty much everybody at the Cal Aggie and of course KDVS during those years.
Shit Astroboy, whoda thunk? I grew up in a place that made Dixon look like a metropolis (Colusa). Did you know Ron Crumb - the illustrator that did a bunch of Charles Bukowski’s books? Or the Couch Potatoes, guys that were honorary Bob Dobbs dudes? Or just the usual bunch of central valley rednecks?
Man, I so do NOT miss the winters. Riding a bicycle through the fog until it burned off into grey overcast for weeks on end and usually damp all fucking day because of the rain that leaked through the poncho and getting stuck on the wrong side of the tracks for 30 minutes. Uh huh, yep, fond fond memories.
George Thorogood, Devo and John Lee Hooker in the coffee house, Bob Marley in Freeman, Replacements at 616 whatever street that house was on, etc.
Well, nothing now. I just meant that I started as an undergraduate in '88. I finished about five years later.* I totally missed the* Dateline* thing, I’m afraid.
Bitchin’! When I was growing up in Vacaville I could get KDVS on my stereo if I used my TV’s cable coaxial as an antenna. That and Barney’s Records (RIP:( ) made Davis seem like a cool-music mecca to teenaged me.
Ahh…and driving around late at night listening to Joe Frank…good times…
I remember when they first put in the bicycle traffic circle by the Chem building. That was a brilliant idea compared to the total chaos that used to occur at that intersection every hour. The first test barrier was a 6" thick (or so) ship rope.
I remember when there was some sort of law that liquor stores could not be within 3 miles of campus. Jakes Liquors was EXACTLY 3 miles … just east of Mace Blvd & south of I-80. I think the building is now an Enterprise Rentacar operation. Pole Line Road was the far east end of town; 113 was the west side (except for Portage Bay apartments way out there by themselves.)
Segundo dorms had a computer lab?!?!?! I lived in Gilmore; same floor as Heather Fargo, now mayor of Sacramento. (She was an EPM’er too.)
I remember the big freeze of December '72, when Putah Creek froze over & the ducks were falling on their asses trying to figure out why the water was so hard and slippery. And there was about an inch of snow one morning.
My daughter is currently a freshman; lives in Malcolm Hall – Segundo lives! She hasn’t settled on a major yet but seems to be waffling between wildlife biology and geology. She’s also a clarinet player in the Band-uh.
It’s been great fun being re-involved as a parent. I even ran into my old advisor, who actually remembered me! I’ll certainly be there for Picnic Day this year.
Maybe you listened to the “hardcore hour” which was actually 2 hours long. I got that going in 1982 and did it until 1985. Also did the only blues show for about 5 years.
I guess i’m the boring one here. I’ve done nothing noteworthy here except goto school.
Lord, Sushi in Davis? I can’t stand it anymore. Once you’ve been to Mikunis(highly recommended!) in sacramento you just can’t go back to any place here. Although I hear Fuji’s is finally improving again.
Former student and resident for awhile after. If you’re a single parent and working, they let you go part time, which takes forever. I delivered pizzas for a couple of years, worked for EH&S for four (they no longer let students collect and pack chemical waste), and then worked for the biogas project in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
I remember when it was only Civil Engineering and was located in Walker Hall. I remember the building of the new half of the library and the huge crane they used. I remember the Blue Mango. I remember Kathy’s Corner (but maybe not the spelling). I remember the protests against the Borders shopping arcade. I remember the flap over the finger in front of the police station.
My oldest son still lives in Davis. My best friend lives there, too. I also go in twice a month to run camera for a community cable show. So I still drop in from time to time.
I’m going to Davis right now! I’m a freshman in the most excellent Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh!! Im going for a degree in Animal Science, but unless i raise my grades and stop failing, grad school options will be shot to hell. I love it here, being from Tulare County originally, this is paradise. You can breathe the air (dont try that at home kids), this fog is transparent compared to driving through the pea soup at home, and it doesnt get nearly as cold/hot outside. much more temperate. plus everyone is awesome. Hoping to stay until she graduates

Well, there is a 50/50 chance I’ll go to Davis for grad school this fall. I’ll be out there this weekend (already dreaming of warm weather). Anyone who’s out there want to meet me for lunch on Friday? I’ve been there once and would like to talk to someone that goes/went there, but who isn’t in the “Let’s seduce grad students to come here” comittee.
I attended UCD briefly in the mid 90s. Most of my memories are of shooting pool on the slightly-crooked table at Trudy’s under the Tercero dining commons. And of the distinctive smell on days when the wind was blowing the wrong way.
I did get my first Internet account as a student there. If I’d spent as much time in class as I did on IRC I would have graduated summa cum laude. Or, you know, at least graduated.
