I’ve got a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge running the latest OS available to me (I’ve checked for updates). I last had an update come through maybe three weeks ago or so. I can no longer recall how close in time to the last update the issue with my phone’s notifications started happening, but it’s pretty obnoxious.
Any app I have that provides me with a notification has ceased to do so in a timely manner. Some examples follow below:
[ul]
[li]MLB At-Bat: I have notifications turned on regarding the start and end of games for the teams I’m interested in. These updates now show up roughly 20 hours after the real event.[/li][li]Words with Friends: I never see notifications anymore because they are so severely delayed that I’ve already gone into the game to check manually about my turns by the time a notification would have shown up.[/li][li]Trivia Crack: Same as above.[/li][li]Facebook: One of the worst offenders. Not only are my notifications severely delayed, but I’ve now started having an issue where the same notification (often from one or two days prior) continues to pop up repeatedly, even after dismissing it multiple times.[/li][li]Weather widget: When I can get it to refresh, it still gives me weather from a few hours ago most of the time. This one isn’t consistent like the others, though.[/li][li]Gmail: I almost never get notifications anymore. I have to go into the app and manually refresh (often, repeatedly) to get any new mail to show up. I’m assuming that, like the others, if I didn’t check my mail for 24 hours, a notification might start showing up.[/li][/ul]
One other potential symptom of note: Over the weekend, a friend that I was texting told me that every time she sent me a text, my phone was responding with the same series of texts I had sent her from the day before—one old text from me in response to each new text she sent.
I have, of course, tried powering off / resetting the phone multiple times. The system time shows correctly at the top right. I did a quick Google search and didn’t run across anyone mentioning the same issue(s) with the latest update.
I’ve been having some Gmail sync issues on my Samsung Galaxy S7 (not an Edge, but also running the latest OS) and I haven’t been able to find any useful information online, so I’m curious to see if you get any other responses. I think I’m still getting timely notifications, but often when I read or label new mail on my phone and then go look at Gmail on a computer or my iPad it’s like I never dealt with the new items. Even as much as an hour later.
I’m having no problems with my texts, or with my Facebook and MLB At Bat notifications (the only other apps from your list that I use).
Hmm. So there are multiple places on the phone that deal with battery saving issues. Today, I went under Settings --> Apps --> Application Manager, pulled down the context menu and went to Special Access, then chose “Optimize Battery Usage.” I changed the pull-down menu to “All apps” and was then able to see which apps the phone was “optimizing.” I turned off the optimization for Gmail, and now my notifications seem to be working correctly, at least for the last half-hour or so. Facebook also just gave me a notification that I was able to see was in real-time.
I’ll find out tonight if the MLB app was fixed by the same. Those are the two that have been the most obviously broken for me. I’ll report back tomorrow to see if it looks like things are truly righted.
My “new” tablet has Android 6.0 on it, too. I haven’t seen this problem. So that suggests Samsung is turning this on for programs it shouldn’t, rather than Google.
At least, when I looked up the OS on your phone, it said Android 6.0. It’s possible the latest update was to 7.0, which I know promises new battery saving stuff. Still, you’d think Google would be smart enough not to have it on for Gmail of all things.
I don’t think people forget it that much. I noted that I’d rebooted my phone several times in the OP.
As an update, my MLB app notifications were working as normal last night, so the problem seems to be resolved…HOWEVER! I now have a notification on my phone for a new system update. Gotta admit I’m hesitant to do it.
