It made sense to me. Buffy has been out to kill Angelus a couple of times, and succeeded once. Kinda. So, Wes in Redemption Mode wanted a guarantee.
Great, great episode.
And now, a couple of smileys, because it’ll confuse the people who don’t read spoilers:
Not to mention that with the Fang Gang having no idea what’s up in Sunnydale, it would be more practical to give Buffy a call than to break Faith out of prison. If they actually did give a call and she said, “Sorry, I’m sort of busy at the moment,” that’d be one thing, but suggesting that Faith’s history with Angel makes her a better choice than Buffy is ridiculous.
The only reason Buffy “killed” Angel before was because she had no choice. There’s no reason for Wesley to think she’d be less willing than Faith to bring Angelus in alive. Wesley has at least as much experience with Buffy as with Faith, and since Angel was back from the “dead” by the time he showed up in Sunnydale and knew about how she was willing to hide him from her friends to protect him . . .
It just doesn’t make sense that when given the choice between breaking the law and not breaking the law, Wesley wouldn’t at least try to pursue the lawful option first, especially when Wesley knows that there’ll be repercusions for Faith when, inevitably, she has to return to prison.
That was the first episode of Angel I’d ever seen (after having seen much, much of BtVS), and good lordy…Faith, Angelus, the Beast, Wesley (when did he get all non-prissy?), Cordy (!)…it all rocked. Oh, yeah.
I think Wes picked Faith because Angelus has far more power over Buffy. The moment Angelus hears Buffy is in LA it turns into an even worse situation. Suddenly the Fang Gang isn’t the prime target and the predictable he’ll come after us turns into let’s see what Angelus can come up with the torture the love of Angel’s life.
Also, it just occured to me, that Wes knows he can’t control Buffy in any meaningful way. He can exert some influence on Faith, or at least he can tell right away if he can’t if he can’t get her out of prison. She’ll take charge and the rest will listen because it is a combat situation and she’s miss combat. Thus through her he’ll be calling the shots.
The way Faith took charge, when walking into the hotel… Soooo much more powerful than the Buffster, with her lame speaches. Dushku has matured in her skills as an actress, too. She doesn’t do all those flashy things she did, back when she was in Sunnydale. And she can project the slayer energy/power in a way I just don’t see in Buffy.
I can easily see a spin off, where she’s chased by the police, while trying to do her slayer gig, without attracting too much attention. Lots of possibilities for tension and suspense there.
Somehow, I’m not sure there won’t be a FtVS. Maybe the networks, ME and Dushku are waiting for reactions from her return to the Buffyverse. Maybe the whole ‘she signed for a pilot’, is just misdirection. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit. No one in the know, would want the audience to know about a Faith spin off.
If, even after spending however many hundreds of years he did in some hell dimension thinking only of Buffy, he’s able to move on enough after only a couple of years in LA to begin developing strong feelings for Cordelia, then I think it’s safe to say Buffy’s no longer “the love of his life”.
I mean, if Angelus were really inclined to just drop everything and go after Buffy, there’s nothing stopping him from ditching LA and heading to Sunnydale. Right now, Angelus is sticking around both because he’s intrigued by the Beast’s mystery boss and because he’s staying close to the people Angel cares most about at this point in his life, Cordelia and Connor.
If Buffy did show up, I’m sure he’d be more inclined to take the personal approach than he was with Faith. He wouldn’t use the Beast as a weapon against Buffy the way he did with Faith because he’d want to beat her with his own two hands, and he’d also try to use their history together against her, but that’s really the extent of it, I think.
My already fairly high opinion of this season will go way up if Angelus ever gets around to using the one genuine psychological weapon he has against Faith, considering she has no real freinds or family to exploit like Buffy did.
I could just come right out and say what I mean, but it’s more fun to see if anyone else knows what I’m talking about.
Don’t mean to sound mentally challenged, but is ME supposed to represent Joss Whedon or what? I never caught the first reference to it and I’m not clear who or what is being referred to by ME.
That was an enjoyable episode. Yay! Faith’s back, and looking much better than the last time we saw her. Loved the Lilah/Wesley scenes.
I think Cordy/Charisma looks gorgeous. I wish I looked that good when I was pregnant. If we find out she’s pregnant with a demon again I’m going to throw something at my TV.
I agree with those who feel that Angelus is really Angel; and I disagree with the notion that the big, blistering bad hitchhiking inside Cordy would not let Angel have his soul back… because what if his soul never was lost in the first place? Sure, sure, the souless fake-out has been done before in Season 3 of Buffy, but the soulless wonder boy has been done before, too.
Without reading any spoiler sites to know if I’m blowing more hot air than usual, I bet that Angel “losing” his soul was just a gambit to draw out the baddie behind the beast; and I bet it was a plan concocted between Wes and Angel.
At any rate, that explains to me, thus far, how Lorn (sp?) could have misread Angel when he was singing in the cage.
And what LunaSea said about Cordy’s pregnancy? I agree. This would be the, what, third time she’s been pregnant on the show? Dude, I wish all of my hot assistants were that easy.
I wouldn’t mind, however, if Angel lost his soul in the last season of the show. And then it would be cool if he was staked at the end.
