The sex scenes were a bit over the top, but did show more of the “relationship”.
Angel’s lines to Lila were great- rather then the sabre rattling I expected. Plus the “smell” line was great.
Major gripe:
The taser’s electrical charge knocked out Angel when used by Connor. Now when electricity is used by our sexy walking generator to attack Angel (with lots more power even), it not only has no bad effect now-- it acts to reanimate his heart (permenently or a while- not clear).
Umm, huh? So Angel just needs to stick his finger in a socket to get his heart going? Since when? Then the taser used by Connor should have just tickled him then. Ouch, my head hurts.
Anyway, the rest of the episode was strong, with plenty of interesting character and plots advancements.
Yeah, the inconsistency with electricity, both within this episode and compared to other episodes, was annoying. The only (lame) defense I can come up with is that SWG (Sexy Walking Generator) didn’t manipulate electricity per se. Her manipulation of the lasers in the vault wasn’t a manipulation of electricity, but instead of light.
'Course, the rest of the time, it really seemed like she was manipulating electricity.
The inconsistency goes farther than that. How did The Initative capture Spike and then keep the vampires in their lil cages? With tasers and electricity. Sure looked painful then.
Maybe we can chalk it up to mystical vs non-mystical energy manipulation? Presuming that SWG’s powers were mystical in origin.
What annoyed me about this episode was the misleading trailer. “He has loved many women with an empty heart” or whatever, with Wesley’s line about how “only the dead can enter her presence.” The implication being that it’s SWG whose presence can’t be entered rather than Shelob or whatever her name was. And way too much was made in the promo of the “romance” between the two. Whatever. We deserve better than that.
Otto, both BtVS and Angel have always had a problem with misleading promos. The thing to remember about them, however, is that the PTB (Joss and Co.) do not make the promos and don’t have creative control over them. These misleading promos are created by the networks’ promotions department (Otherwise known as “The first up against the wall when the revolution comes.”)
IMHO there’s a difference between misleading for the sake of not giving everything away and misleading for the sake of completely misrepresenting the episode. The promo for the amnesia episode of Buffy comes to mind. Giles and Anya kissing? That was a great mislead. The promo for this Angel ep was a complete sham from start to finish and it really pissed me off.
It’s a real problem when you have an exceptionally powerful character like Angel. He has taken on and easily defeated bad guys who were much more powerful than SWG, but it didn’t fit the plot in this case. Why did she more than hold her own in hand-to-hand combat before she took off her gloves? Doesn’t make much sense, based on past battles Angel should have mopped the floor with her.
Kinda like Wes did with Lila.
The promo was trash, but I’ve grown to expect that. I’m glad they showed some emotion on Fred’s party besides worry and avenging woman. She has been holding down the fort since Angel, Cordy, Loren, and Gru left.
I think Angel was taking it easy on SWG during the hand to hand combat. He didn’t want to just beat the daylights out of her.
How much did it suck watching Fred break down like that? Sometimes you forget that they’re supposed to be people, and risking your life constantly like they do is hard on the emotions.
Hell, we can chalk it up to the difference between AC and DC if we want to. Tasers use high frequency, high voltage AC current, and I believe that defibrilators (which btw stop fibrillation, not start hearts) use high voltage, short duration DC current.
