It was the only show I watched before I put my telly in the cupboard. Glad I didn’t pay my licence now.
How Dare the BBC sack him for ‘Allegedly’ taking cocaine and renting a prostitute. Grrr. Very saddened. Emotional…
Don’t be surprised if this thread goes the same way as the Ulrika Jonsson one, and since I don’t believe the show is sold abroad it will be of little interest to Dopers who don’t receive BBC2.
Here’s the story about why he was sacked in case your interested, and here’s a viewers’ discussion on the BBC’s own website. I’ll admit that it is one of my favourite shows too, and it will be a pity to see Angus Deayton drop out, but the explanation given - that he was in no position to be satirising public figures caught with their pants down if he was breaking the law himself - is unarguable.
FWIW I’ve voted for Stephen Fry to replace him, but Clive Anderson and John Sergeant would be pretty good too.
Without commenting on whether he should have been sacked or not, I would like to say that the show would have been worse off if Paul Merton were to leave - Angus mostly reads the autocue whereas Paul is stunningly spontaneous.
WELL annoyed by that. I don’t think I agree with the explanation, either. It’s not like the show puts the panelists on a pedestal of moral superiority for their satire to be effective - nor does it abhor impropriety.
The BBC website poll shows 70+% think he should have been retained.
Have to agree with grim. Apparently Merton’s hosting on Friday, so we should get a chance to see if he’s better as host than competitor. I think Sergeant would be good, he can read a script and deliver a punchline, which, after all, is all that Deyton did. However, who wrote Deyon’s scripts? Was it he or was it somebody else? May have a bearing on who gets the host’s job.
This is one of the few shows I actively try to make the time to watch and I could absolutely not care less what Deyton did in his private life. Stupid, stupid move.
That said, it would definitely be worse with Merton gone.
I have not seen the show since '99 due to emigration, but it was by far my favourite TV programme. I still enjoy watching the shows I taped in the '95-'99 time frame. Although I agree that Paul Merton would have been a bigger loss (the season he was absent was a relatively weak one), it will not be the swame without Angus.
It’s true that banter at the expense of the regulars is part of the show (Hislop’s brushes with the libel courts for example), but has anyone considered the idea that they might be trying to keep Deayton off the front pages for his own sake?
The beeb haven’t sacked him altogether, there’s even been a suggestion that he could appear as a guest when the dust has settled.
Vaughn would a rubbish choice - the show would break up after one series with him on board, but the right choice could give it a shot in the arm. They have to “keep it in the family”, which is why Fry or Sergeant would work.
I’m not entirely bothered, really. While I’m a little surprised that what I thought was old news has seen him “removed”, I didn’t think he was that entertaining. Scripted put-downs? I’m sure there are quite a few who could have a go at that.
I’m not all that bothered that he’s gone, particularly if there’s a decent replacement. The jokes at his expense were getting a bit old and had become too predictable. While you couldn’t expect the panellists to spurn such obvious opportunities, his departure might force them to move on. The fact that the show had been hijacked to such an extent by Angus’ difficulties might have been a factor in the decision to remove him.
Not really old news. The producers said they’d monitor the situation after last time but he’s been at it again since. As others have said, what he’s been accused of would be no big deal from most viewers’ point of view, but it’s become a distraction.
yojimbo, flapcats
The next show is on Friday at 9.30. Anyone with access to BBC tonight needn’t get beyond the Celtic v Blackburn game.
