Animal and bird survival during hurricane

As a native born California, I know nothing about hurricanes from personal observation.
However, I have wondered what do pelicans, seagulls and other birds do to protect themselves from the hurricane…same true with wild animals in the hurricane areas. Would aprreciate any information on the above.
