I just watched a preview copy of Dead Leaves last night, and I am still in awe. It’s one of the best anime experiences I have had.
It’s hard to describe, but let me take a stab at it. Two people (?) wake up naked in a garbage dump, with no memories. They decide to go in search of clothes and something to eat, and wind up in a running gun battle with the police. And that’s just the first 5 minutes. The action is so fast that “frenetic” is inadequate to describe it. The action sequences are hyperviolent and funny at the same time, and the non-action sequences are even funnier.
The art style looks like anime crossed with hip-hop (at least to me, but I’m a white guy pushing 40, so what do I know?), and is flawlessly executed throughout. It’s unabashedly 2D, with a simple color palette, but sucks you in better than much CG, simply because it is so well-done.
It comes out on Sept. 28th, and I will be buying it, even though I already have the preview. It’s that good.
