The great jazz vocalist Anita O’Day died on Thanksgiving morning.
I heard her sing with a small combo at Fat Tuesday’s in lower Manhattan back in the late '80s, after long admiring her 1940s work with the Gene Krupa band featuring Roy Eldridge. She was also showcased in the seminal jazz festival movie Jazz on a Summer’s Day back in 1960, turning in a spectacular set.
I suppose 87’s a pretty good age to make it to, considering all the junk and liquor she consumed.
(Yeah, I saw** Eve**'s thread, but I think Anita deserves one to herself.)
Man do I /did I/deed I love Anita. Sings the Most and Swings with Billy May were fantastic. Unfortunately I made the mistake of seeing her at Fat Tuesday’s in the early 90’s. Total Disaster. And Sad.
