Multiple outlets are reporting Ann B. Davis passed away after a home accident. And one more face of our childhood passes.
She died in a fall in her bathroom, so the clip showed in the linked article shows her character, Alice, falling into a dunk tank. Not the best choice.
The Bradys will have to clean their own nasty house now.
I don’t know much about her career other than that show. R.I.P. Ann
Well, that sucks. As a kid, I saw her so regularly on tv that her character seemed like someone I knew. She was 88? Jeez.
She’ll now join Sam the Butcher and Mr. Brady in what lies ahead of us all.
Well if you’re older she was in The Bob Cummings Show about a playboy photographer. She played the secretary who had a (unrequited) crush on the lead.
Damn. Makes me feel old. Schultzy
What a perfect foil to Bob Cummings in 1955.
Ann B. Davis
Ann B. Dead
Housekeeper Alice
Fell on her head!
I’ve checked on Ann B. Davis’s status from time to time, just seeing if she was still alive and what she was doing. I suppose it had to happen sometime, but it’s sad she died from an accident.
A photographer who was a playboy. This was network TV in the 1950s fer cryin’ out loud.
Pedantics aside, I am sorry for her family, her friends, and her fans. She brought fun and happiness to many peoples lives.
Eternal reruns?
Actually I was going to quote the Beastie Boys line about “Sam the Butcher givin’ Alice the beef” but I thought “Too soon…”
Alice doesn’t live *anywhere *any more.
RIP.
I wasn’t much of a Brady Bunch fan so I too remember her more for her “Schultzy” character.
R.I.P. Ann
I have fonder memories of her as Schultzy than I do of her as Alice. In fact, she won two Emmy awards for her role as Schultzy.
Today’s fun fact: Brady Bunch producers were torn between making the mom funny and the housekeeper the straight(wo)man, or going the other way. When Ann B. Davis became available, they went with that and cast Florence Henerson overJoyce Bullifant as the mom and Kathleen Freeman as the housekeeper.
Odd the power of TV; her obit thread has way more traction than Maya Angelou’s earlier in the week.
Trivia: She had an identical twin sister.
You’ll read that she lived with an Episcopalian minister and his wife; that’s not exactly true. Their denomination was listed as Episcopalian, but they weren’t mainstream at all- they were more of a “boutique church”- very small congregation. She seemed very happy, and the couple she lived with certainly didn’t milk her dry- she was a car enthusiast who drove late model sports cars at least as recently as the late '90s when she was on a talk show and mentioned that she had a vintage Corvette and a new gold Miata.
I really enjoyed her in The Brady Bunch but the Bob Cummings show was before my time. Do you know what episodes were her best in that show? I see there are some on Youtube, but which ones would you recommend?
Trivia: In The Brady Bunch Movie, Davis played a truck driver named Schultzy.
There’s not much left of those shows, and most of what’s left focuses on guest stars. But this one has several sequences that focus on Schultzy (particularly starting at 7:30 and 18:30.)
I think she’s actually better in scenes where she’s the 3rd or 4th character, mostly in the background reacting. Even when she was sitting at a desk and all you could see was her face, she was “in” the scene.
