She died of a bone marrow disease yesterday. She was a cultural icon, and I wonder what will happen to her column now. Dear Abby is writing her column with her daughter, so one can assume her daughter will take over once mom is gone.
She was based in Chicago…anyone know what the city will do in her honor? For me, she was a bit too left-leaning politically for my tastes, but I did enjoy her columns.
Was it Dear Abby or Ann Landers that the guy wrote to concerned he was having sexual thoughts about his girlfriend’s young daughters, and she turned him into the police?
Funny thing was, my newspaper ran her regular column, even though her death was the front page headline. I thought they would have pulled it, maybe running a “In Memoriam” or something in the space where her column would be. From what I remember of my brief stint working in a newspaper, aren’t the feature sections done and printed before the Sunday front section is done? I guess it’s not like television, where I was running to pull all the airline spots off the air on Sept. 11.
Sorry, I just realized I was rambling. I guess I better get the coffee started.
