For the love of all, please tell me you realize she isn’t a real person. George Plimpton wrote that article for Sports Illustrated as a joke about the direction women’s tennis has gone.

No, she IS real. She plays in her first professional tournament next year, on either February 30th or 31st if I recall.

However, there IS a Russian tennis player called Maria Sharapova, who’s already doing some modelling whilst her WTA ranking hasn’t even been in Top 100 yet. Before you get any dirty ideas, gentlemen: this girl was born in 1987.

Well, I have no problem at all with Anna (I like how we all refer to her first name rather than attempt her last name :D), but this reminds me ofa Chris Rock bit. (paraphrased very loosely)-

Yeah I gotta be honest, Anna doesn’t do much for me. When all these people cream over her, she does even less.
Hey, don’t anyone try to lump me in with the herd. I’m a red-blooded hetereosexual male who (yes) has a lot of pictures and other media of beautiful women, and I’m telling you, Anna Kournikova does nothing for me.
However, my beef isn’t with her; she’s doing what nearly anyone else who had massive fame and fortune just handed to her for no logical reason would do. My beef is with anyone and everyone who handed her massive fame and fortune.
Furthermore, I’d like someone to please explain to me how appeal to horny teenage hetereosexual males became a prerequisite for <<ANYTHING>> in women’s tennis. I don’t seem to recall anyone drooling over Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Jennifer Capriati, Gabriela Sabatina, Jennifer Capriati etc., and they all had a helluva lot more success than Kournikova. I mean, if she were a TV star, I wouldn’t have a beef with her getting by on sex appeal, but a professional athlete is expected to compete and should be paid accordingly. (Oh, and this definitely holds for the men as well…I find it downright scandalous that Mike Tyson got paid as much as he did for getting his butt handed to him by Lennox Lewis.)
A lot of the resentment isn’t just because Kournikova’s getting way too much for way too little (although there’s definitely that), but because she’s taking the spotlight from a lot of other, much better players. How many websites to Lindsey Davenport or the Williams sisters have you seen lately? Remember, too, that Kournikova has never, in her entire career, won a singles title; in contrast, the “all style no substance” Andre Agassi had seven before the age of 19. There’s no way in hell someone’s who’s “a consistent top 50 player” deserves the kind of press…and money…she’s been getting.
There’s even the very real danger that this will skew the focus on tennis and make sex appeal more important than the ability to play the damn game. Keep in mind that the WTA has had trouble finding sponsors and staying afloat…if those horny teenage males (good lord, ten years ago could anyone have imagined them having this kind of power over women’s tennis?) are what’s bringing the bucks in, you can bet that there will be a lot more pressure to produce more Kournikovas.
I just don’t think that what’s good for horny guys with really low standards is good for women’s tennis, know what I’m saying?

There was some major drooling over Gabriela Sabatini at least, and I personally did some drooling over Pam Shriver, but that’s just me.
I don’t know what it is about Anna but that girl is GORGEOUS! I guess I just dig her exotic look.
Anna Kournikova is drop-dead beautiful. Instead of people bashing her, why don’t they just: Deal With It!
