OK, I don’t know if that’s what it actually will be called, but a musical version of *The Diary of Anne Frank * is indeed scheduled to open next month in Madrid, according to the Guardian. I agree, it doesn’t seem like the most obvious inspiration for a musical, but then that must be why I’m not a show-business impresario.
The first thing that came to mind was this. It just seems that this musical would be just as popular.
Same thought here.
And in that vein, why hasn’t anyone ever followed up on doing a musical version of Kafka’s Metamorphosis?
“Gregor Samsa awoke one day to find that he had been turned into a giant cockroach.”
Nah, too good.
To me, that’s just weird… I mean, Anne Frank - the Opera? Yes. Anne Frank, the Musical… just sounds so off.
Then again, in a way, “Les Miserables, the Musical” also sounds weird when you think of it. I suppose Musicals are now becoming modern-day Operas. People just don’t want to deal with recitative anymore, is all. I mean, in many ways, Opera and Operettas have just evolved into “musical theatre” as we know it today – merging with the “musical comedies”, if you will. They’re not all light fare anymore.
::: shrug ::: I guess it will all depend on how things are billed. A big poster of “ANNE FRANK: THE MUSICAL” is just wrong
on so many levels. I would picture tap dancing nazis shooting through ceilings.
La cucaracha, la cucaracha
Ya no puede caminar
It does seem of, besides simply taste: “Hey Fritz, what’s all that singing and dancing? We’d better have a look.”
tagline: “Like Cinderella, but before she became a cinder!” (OK, that’s a bit evil)
Wow, a real-life Springtime for Hitler.
I am the very model of a modern SS General…
