Annie-Xmas, I can think of a word that fits

“Shodan, Fotheringay-Phipps, and MaxTheVool”. Hmm … all those disclaimers for nothing.

It’s like watching an Old Bolshevik getting purged …

Sure, no need to worry your pretty little head about it. I understand you completely.

And the action that elicits the reaction of “nigger” would not in any way hinge on it being something stereotypically black. All that would matter is if it pissed off the observer.

If there are stereotypes/behaviors associated with this slur (and I’m sure some people see it this way in their own heads, a sentiment I feel perfectly comfortable calling racist and harmful), by far the greatest is being black. Anything, culturally and societally, that is thought of as “more black” would fit better – if someone says “n*****s do XYZ”, XYZ almost certainly is considered at large to be “blacker” behavior, whether it’s positive or negative. It’s about “blackness”, and the cultural/societal traits that have been assigned to “blackness”. An ugly slang/slur I grew up hearing (not directed at me personally) was “wigger”, a white person who behaves in ways that society has deemed are stereotypically black (whether it be manner of dress, speaking, music choice, etc.).

Thus, the slur is about blackness and anything associated (due to cultural/societal biases and bigotries) with blackness. I’ll note something that should be obvious – concepts like “blackness” and “whiteness” are entirely constructed by society and culture and can and do change quite frequently.

Can you expand on this? What exactly are you doing, and why are you doing it? Are you trolling?

If a black guy cuts you off on the freeway and you verbally or mentally call him a nigger for doing so, it’s not because he’s exhibiting some sort of behavior that we associate with black culture. You’re pissed, and you try and think of an insult that is going to hurt, and the one that hurts in this case is “nigger”. And it hurts because the guy is black. If it was an old person who did it, you’d call them an old fart or grandpa (or something like that).

Are you posting devil’s advocate positions in order to stimulate discussion? Are you trolling?

Enjoy yourself, Twinkle Toes!

“Good - you are getting it.”

My mother was once called a “nigger” when she, as a newbie waitress with klutzy tendencies, accidentally spilled food on a customer.

Black people have a number of negative stereotypes attached to them. But “klutzy” ain’t one of them.
Racists see what they want to see, using rationalizations that conform to what they want to believe. A racist sees a black person laughing at a normal volume and says to him/herself, “Niggers are so loud.” A racist sees a black person with 2.5 kids and says to himself/herself, “Niggers reproduce like roaches!” A racist sees a black person make a minor mistake and says to him/herself, “Niggers are so stupid!” A racist sees a black person doing anything that departs from “normal”, like spilling a plate of spaghetti on their first day of work, and they say to him/herself, “Why are niggers always doing nigger shit?!”

When I was in high school, I was hanging out on the beach with a group of other kids. It was a multiracial group–probably a 60/40 black-white split. We were just admiring the waves and the vast openness, something we landlocked city slickers didn’t get to see every day. What did we do to deserve the “nigger” apellation that was yelled at us by some racist passers-by? Absolutely nothing. It didn’t matter to those passersby that we were high school orchestra students who had just finished giving a performance at a retirement center. We were “niggers” because we had the audacity to be black and black-adjacent.

No. Are you?

No.

So what exactly are you doing, and why are you doing it?

As a white person, I cringe at my fellow whities claiming that there are “black people and then there are niggers”. Yes, Chris Rock had a comedy routine about that, but we’re talking about real life here. And every black person in the US gets called “nigger” at some point in their lives for no other reason that they’re black. Period. If you want to justify that or excuse it or whitesplain it or whatever, you are at best an idiot and at worst a racist. Take your pick.

Oh, I think they’re both.

I’ve noted earlier in this thread that I don’t play defense. What I can tell you in a very general sense is that (as I’ve said many times on this board) I participate in discussions that interest/amuse/entertain me, and focus on the points that interest/amuse/entertain me. Defending myself against charges of trolling or having to justify my posting style etc. isn’t generally something that interests/amuses/entertains me. I’m comfortable leaving that to others, many of whom have already had their say.

I remember when I still lived in NC and occasionally had people tell me that of course they weren’t racist (after all, a racist would be a *bad *person!) and they had nothing at all against black people… just ‘those certain ones.’

For some strange reason I never believed that part about not being racist. Hm. Maybe because I’ve never had someone come up to me and say they are fine with most white people, just not ‘those,’ you know the type.

Are you stating your honest positions on the issues discussed, or are you stating positions that are not yours for entertainment value?

That’s pretty good, but you most watch your frame. And don’t let your arms swing out of control too much. Keep the elbows high. And your feet-- remember that the toes are pointed, and not sticking out to the sides. Now, I want to see you practice those things for your next dance. You have potential!

If you limit it to things I’ve actually stated, then Option 1 is correct - all these are my actual positions. If you expand to things that are being imputed based on “if he’s saying X he must be really trying to advance Agenda Y”, or “the type of guy who says X really believes Y”, or the like, then all bets are off.

This amount of repeated straining on your part suggests that your ego has been punctured somewhat. My apologies.

FTR I think you’re a bright guy as a general rule, and your stupidity and weaseling in this thread seems like something of an outlier. If I were you I would just move on. But if you can’t, then that’s your call of course.

So there’s no difference between thinking of some one as a black person, and thinking of them as a nigger? That doesn’t make sense, as has been pointed out.

You of all people should be able to recognize the difference.

Regards,
Shodan
