Man, I think we need a support group for “Several Species…With A Pict” aficionados because I love that track–that, and most of the rest of Ummagumma is my all time favorite Hallowe’en music soundtrack.
Big Bad Voodoo Lou, what can I say? Buncha savages in this town… We’ll just keep on keepin’ on with our stylin’ selves and they can all just go hang! What’s your favorite Dick Dale track? Mine’s “F Groove,” I’ll listen to that fifty times in a row, easy.
Yeah, people really hate it when I point the media player at my general music folder and hit shuffle–there’s no telling what might come up! Cab Calloway followed by Marilyn Manson followed by Bette Midler followed by The Hellecasters followed by Cornershop followed by The Hollies followed by ICP followed by CSNY followed by The Bonzo Dog Doodah Band followed by Radiohead followed by Sonny Boy Williamson followed by The B-52’s followed by Rob Zombie… you get the idea. I think it’s hilarious and that’s my preferred method to listen to music but if there’s anyone else in the room they get hinky after a while.
I know it’s practically a cliche, but I can’t help but break into a wide, Joker-like smile every time I hear the opening chords of Dale’s “Miserlou.” It brings me back to being an angry, awkward, confused 11th grader and seeing Pulp Fiction on its opening day in 1994 and being blown away. I loved the hell out of that movie and the song (and all the other surf music on the soundtrack), and really played a large part in shaping both my musical and film tastes in the years that followed. “Miserlou” just psyches me up and makes me happy, no matter what. If I was a pro wrestler, I’d strongly considering having that play as my theme music when I walked down to the ring.
Death Rape 2000 by Wiseblood, three notes rapidly repeated for 9 minutes. Christianity is Stupid by Negativland, the Rev. Ivan Stang screaming, “And the loud speaker spoke up and said, 'Christianity is stupid! Communism is good! Give up! Give up!” to really bizarre music. A great way to relax.
I saw her at UCLA a couple of weeks ago. You’ll be pleased to know that she drove about 1/4 of the audience from the hall over the course of a two hour concert.
I have an Animaniacs CD and a classic Sesame Street music boxed set that made it into my digital music collection. The songs come up on the iPod in the car, or on my computer here, right along the metal and the rap and the rock and the funk.
It’s very soothing to all of a sudden hear “Rubber Ducky” or “Countries of the World” right in the middle of the day
And me too for Several Species. By the way, there is a Floyd cover band in the Baltimore/DC area by the name of “Several Species” that is SO amazing and well worth any amount of money spent. Just FYI.
That’s a good one. I sat back and listened to it the other day when it came on, and I was all “wow, this is deep…” I like the “How Do You Do?” song with Grover and Lena Horne, myself.
Koyaanisqatsi is (IMHO) one of his more approachable works. It’s a film score, so it’s debatable if he “diluted” some of his repetitive and atonal tendencies for a more popular appeall.
Something like *Satyagraha * isn’t bad either - it’s an opera, so it had to be structured so humans could sing it.
You’ve got the idea, but way more extreme shifts in feel and tonality. Try more like from this to this to this to thisthis back to this like it’s nothing. Most of the time when I grab control of the stereo at a party I quickly end up hearing “Um, no dude.” while someone comes over and wrests control away from me.
Judging from what I remember of Koyaanisqatsi from my freshman Earth Science class 22 years ago, there was no toning down of any repetitive tendencies…
Yo, I’ll tell you what I want, what I really really want! So tell me what you want, what you really really want! I wanna (huh), I wanna (huh), I wanna (huh), I wanna (huh), I wanna really really really wanna zig-a-zag ah!
I’ve got a couple of Car Talk CD’s. Which reminds me that it’s past time to check whether they’ve put out another one. I usually don’t like every song on the disc, but that’s the case with most albums. My favorite tracks are Grandpa’s Advice and Duct Tape Madrigal in C Major.
I’ve got a couple of bagpipe CD’s. I have to be in the right mood for those. Except for the Christmas one. That just has to be the right season.
Now about those Disney albums. Does that include the full hour It’s a Small World? 'Cause I’ve got that on vinyl.
Back in my college days I played some Derek Bailey for a friend who objected, “But he’s just screwing around!” Without a word I handed him a guitar. Fortunately my friend was smart enough to recognize that the ensuing attempt at free improvisation was not in the same league as what Bailey was doing.
