Music you are a little ashamed to have in your Mp3 collection.

Ok, so I was sitting here rocking out to “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Pat Benetar, and I notice that I have some Neil Diamond coming up. This is a bit jarring because I have Winamp on random play, and these two came between “Voodoo People” by Prodigy and “Stairway to Heaven” by Zeppelin. So I got to wondering, what music do you have that you secretly really like, but would turn red if anyone saw?

Fes up.

Most people would be embarrassed by the massive amount of pop music that I have in my MP3 collection. Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Nsync, ect. I’m not, to hell with them I say! I like my boy bands and trashy teen queens and I’m not afraid to say it.

On the other hand, I swear I don’t know how that Nickleback song got on my list. I certainly never put it on my list. It musta been some evil Nickleback loving elf. Yeah, that’s it…

Hi, my name is Laura…
hi, Laura!
…and I like to listen to sob Barry Manilow
GASP You big freak!

Yep, I live in fear of the day…

I have two John Tesh songs in my collection
::hiding face in embarassment::

I also have a few M.C. Hawking gansta rap tunes in there as well, but I’m not embarassed about those - physics ROCKS!

Neil Sedaka. I really like Neil Sedaka.

I’m ashamed to admit that I know that “Total Eclipse of the Heart” is by Bonnie Tyler, not Pat Benatar (Okay, actually I DIDN’T know it was by Bonnie Tyler… I googled that, but I did know it WASN’T Pat Benatar).

“Total Eclipse of the Heart” is, in fact, by Bonnie Tyler. I know this and I’m proud to know it.

There’s very little I’m ashamed of in my mp3 collection. There’s plenty OTHER people might be ashamed of me having, but not me. I love every second of 80s music I have. I got no problem with having “E-Mail My Heart” by Britney Spears (except it’s not nearly as hilarious as it should be from the title.) I am not at all afraid to say that I’ve got “Who Let the Dogs Out” by the Baha Men. It’s there.

It’s all good. I like it all. Even the ones I don’t like, I’m happpy to have. I love the collecting aspect of it. I know that, in my heart, there are songs I couldn’t stand back in 1986 that I was thrilled to finally find on mp3 because of the memories they brought back. And if a little Sugar Ray on my hard drive now means remembering a certain point of my life later on, I’ll gladly give it the measly amount of space it takes up.

A side note - something I’ve seen a lot on message boards is this. A person will go see any movie that comes down the pike, anything at all, and if anyone points out that it’s crap, that perosn will rise up and say, “Well it’s just entertainment, it doesn’t have to be Oscar calibre, blah blah blah.” Then, that SAME person will turn around and insist that all music that enters his ears must be only the finest avant-garde sufficiently underground aural experience around, and will dismiss anything that’s too “poppy” or “popular”. Why the double standard? (I admit I have this same double standard in the opposite direction, but at least in my case I’m talking about wasted money and wasted 2 hours rather than 3 minutes of a song on the radio.)

Don’t have guilty pleasures. Guilty pleasures mean you’re letting other people decide how you should feel about what you like. Crank up that “It’s Raining Men” or “Theme from Battlestar Galactice (with voice-over intro!)” and enjoy what you like.

eep
You are right!
I knew that also, I just looked at the mislabled file without thinking.

Sorry Bonnie.

Lot of sappy sappy stuff.

Embarassing? A couple of Ace of Base songs…

I’ve downloaded two KISS-related songs: I Was Made for Loving You (disco KISS) and Back in the New York Groove from the Ace Frehley solo album.

I Am embarrassed to have a Marc Anthony song in mp3…when I built this computer I just took all the mp3s off the old one and trasfered them over, so I have stuff that my brother or sister downloaded that I REALLY REALLY REALLY don’t like. But I never bother to track them down and delete them, so they pop up at the most unexpected moments!

ooh. Maybe this is something i **ought ** to be ashamed of. The Fraggle Rock them song in Spanish. Los Fraggle. Makes me laugh every time though.

Honourable mention goes to the Mana Mana Muppet song in German too. Very funny!

I have this entire “Various Artists” file in my Music Match library that just appeared after doing a full re-install on my desktop. I do not know how it got there, but it contains N’Sync, Ricky Martin, Savage Garden, and Will Smith’s Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It. I need to delete these before anyone sees.

As far as embarrassing stuff I’ve downloaded on purpose, I’ll go with old school rap: Fresh Prince-era Will Smith, Run DMC, and Ton Loc, as well as gangsta’ rap a’la the Office Space soundtrack.

I’ve burned these and played them loud in the lab though, so I guess I’m not too embarrassed.

Amid my hard rock/heavy metal MP3s I have all kinds of non-fits for my list, including:

[ul]
[li] the entire Planets suite by Gustav Holst[/li][li] I’m Not in Love by 10CC[/li][li] Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush[/li][li] Wildfire by Michael Martin Murphy[/li][li] Somewhere by Barbara Streisand[/li][li] The Way We Were by Barbara Streisand[/li][/ul]

Keep in mind that these selections occur in the same MP3 list as Mudvayne. Slipknot, Metallica, Staind, Tool, etc.

I confess - I have three CDs by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Don’t ask me to explain it. I swear, I haven’t listened to them in years. But what was really weird was one night when I was running one of the File-Sharing-Programs-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named and somebody was hammering my machine for hours trying to get every last one of those songs. Weird.

I enjoy a wide range of music, and I don’t feel embarassed or guilty about any of it.

I’m primarily a metalhead–the heavier, the better. I’m probably one of the few people who considers death metal not all that heavy. But I love Culture Club, and Genesis (with Phil Collins on vocals), and Steely Dan, and the Bangles, and a bunch of other bands that many people would question.

I have a bunch of songs that others would probably find embarrassing, but I’ll admit to liking every one of them. However I do have one that is embarrassing on two levels. “Stay Out of My Bedroom” by Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton from the movie “Rhinestone.” Everyone I know besides my mother and myself hates this movie, not to mention Stallone’s singing abilities, but I love them both. I sing the song at the top of my lungs whenever I’m alone, but if any of my friends found it on my list I’d die.

Toto’s “Africa” (in my defense–my roommates and I would play that song soley to make fun of the awful lyrics contained within).

“My Perogative” by Bobby Brown

That’s all I can think of right now.

Boobsalot, by the Fugs, the east coast answer to the Mothers.

An old girlfriend and I used to exchange MP3s. One day I discovered Barbie Girl, though in German. It’s hilarious, though anyone else who saw it would probably think I was nuts.

Slightly embarassed of the sappy songs I kept. I am definitely not ashamed of the 80’s music collection.
