Annual Daylight Savings Time Poll

I’m a night person, so having daylight longer into the evening is a help to me. I hate the feeling of “lateness” during the winter when it’s only 7 or 8 in the evening. Bring on the DST, I say.

If daylight later in the evening is an advantage, why not just keep the clocks on DST all year round?

Hate it. Actually seriously considered moving to Eastern Indiana just to avoid it, but now I guess we’re all stuck with it.

Kids waiting at 7am for a bus in the dark.

And the further south you get the less effect DST has

We have that most of the school year in the Northwest.

I think it’s interesting how many people dislike it. I love the fact it is now 5:30pm and really light in Chicago. Almost makes me want to get off my lazy butt and do something

I like that it stays light out longer, but I haaaaaaate adjusting to the change, both at the beginning and end of DST.

Daylight saving time means an extra hour of light each day. No wonder we have global warming. Its all the extra sunlight! What we really need is daylight wasting time so we can cool the planet back down. Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before? I guess nobody has a brain that works like mine!!!

Don’t forget all the farmers. Because they get that extra hour of daylight all the crops are exposed to too much sun and many of them burn and the cows milks spoils

I think we should get rid of it.

I am 100% in favor of DST right now. My 2-year-old had been getting up at 5 AM for the last two weeks. (We all normally get up 7-ish.) Now he’ll be waking up at 6 instead.

There are undeniable benefits to having daylight in the evening instead of early in the morning, but the benefits are spread out through most of the year. The inconvenience is concentrated. I think they more or less balance each other out. I love the late evenings, but I hate the adjustment.

When daylight saving was first proposed, the plan was to adjust the clocks gradually over several days. At the time that was too much trouble, but with most clocks adjusting automatically now, it seems like it might be possible. Heck, just declare that sunrise at the defining merdian for each timezone and at some moderate latitude shall be defined as 6:00 a.m. each day.

I love it! I get home about 6:30 - 7:00 most nights and it’s only just started to be light again when I get home. Now that we’re back in Daylight Saving Time, I can ride my bike again in the evening, or do some chores around the yard so I have less to do on Saturday morning. Tonight I’m going to cook my dinner on the grill since it’s much easier to do that by daylight rather than by flashlight. The more light in the evening the better!

You know, if I’d actually voted this morning I’d have been tempted to vote that I hate it. But now that I’ve been able to ride my bike after dinner . . . .

ETA: You know, Frazzled, if your user name is any indication maybe you could use the extra sleep instead of trying to cram more into your day!

BTW, according to the excellent book Seize the Daylight by David Prerau, a good number of us have something like perpetual Daylight Saving Time now. Ever since the time zones were first established, they’ve crept westward, as people living just west of the border invariably push to join the timezone to the east. Partly I imagine this is because of the population centers on the east coast, and the desire of businesses to keep on the same time as New York and Washington (or at leas be as close as possible), but I think there is good evidence that given the choice between being slightly behind local mean solar time and being an hour or so ahead of it, most people prefer to be ahead.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I F—ING HATE DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME!!!

Either adopt DST year-round or get rid of it entirely, but stop making us change our clocks twice a year and screwing up our circadian rhythms. Businesses can adopt seperate summer hours and winter hours if they feel they must, but stop screwing with the clocks!

Actually, since they keep lengthening the amount of time we spend on DST, maybe soon we’ll be on it year-round. Then, maybe we can get the rest of the world to go on DST year-round, and all the time zones will shift to the west one zone.

Let’s split the difference. Move all the clocks back 30 minutes in the fall and keep them there all the time.

Pick a time and keep it year round.

I hate changing the clocks, especially when we set them forward in the spring and I have to get up earlier.

I like it being light later.

I wish we started DST in April, though. It used to be light when I got up at 7am, but now it isn’t any more. I hate getting up when it’s still dark.

Whatever we can do to provide more usable daylight is fine by me. Nothing is more depressing than getting home from work and having it be dark w/ no chance to be outside in the light.

I wish the standard practice was for a workday to start at 6am and end around 2pm. Same for schools.

I don’ think the SDMB is the place to get very good/balanced results. All these gamers, techies, movie watchers, shut-ins and geeks couldn’t care less about sunlight.
