Another anthrax question

Can Anthrax grow outside a body??
Since they are spores can they grow like yeast ,or mushrooms?

I just did a little research on sourdough bread. Amazing stuff. You can create a start by leaving a dough of flour , sugar and water in the open on the counter. Enough yeast is present in the air to start a colony.Thats all the yeast the old timers had to bake bread.

Do anthray spores grow that easily or do they need a specific host.

Yes, it can and does grow in the wild, especially around farm animals (though pigs are usualy not affected). Exposure to natural sources (usually animals or their assorted parts) is the usual route of infection. The spores form when conditions are not good for gowth. The bacterium goes into a sort of suspended animation until growth conditions improve.

Here is a good source of info on anthrax that is relatively free of hype and scare-mongering.

oops, forgot one thing.

Just to clarify, when I said Anthrax can grow in the wild, I meant in the soil primarily. UV light will kill it (even the spores), so it cannot survive in direct sunlight for very long.
