Another big decision thread (goodbye UK)

Well, after months of indecision about it, I’ve decided to move back to Pennsylvania.

Some of you will know about my situation here in the UK (separated from my British wife), and nothing’s changed in the past few months. I’ve decided to go back to the US to get a job (seeing as I positively dread the one I’ve got here) and finish my Ph.D dissertation. After six months my wife and I are going to make a decision about our future together. After talking to her tonight, I don’t think the prognosis is good, unfortunately.

I’m planning to go home for Christmas (somewhere near the 22nd of December) and then stay 'till about June. At first I’m going to be living with my parents in York, PA. They’re only just moving there themselves at the end of November–I’ve never even been to the place. I’ll probably be looking for jobs in Philly or Baltimore in database management or academic administration.

To all US Dopers: I hope by the time I get back you will have elected Gore. If Bush gets elected I may have to sneak out over the Canadian border.

It’ll be good to be back in “The Land of Donuts” again. And, hey, I won’t be under any passport restrictions to get to DopeFests.

Yeah but getting to Dublin will be a little more expensive.

Sorry to hear about the marriage. Hope the US treats you a little nicer.

Admit it you’ll miss boiled pizza

Boiled pizza??? Thank God for the Revolution!

C’mon home, Duke. (But I’m still voting for Bush.)

I had no idea you were American, Duke - I always thought you were a Brit. Good luck man - the EU can be a bitch when you’re not married to one of the locals.

And hey: why not fly out of Amsterdam? We could do a beer or two

Well now, if you move to Baltimore, you will have to get acquainted with all us Baltimorons/DC Dopers. Welcome back, and hope you make your way down here.

PS If we elect Bush, I’ll run for the border with you.

Well Duke, we’re also having an election in November and depending on the results, you may NOT want to sneak into Canada either.

All the best.

Are you trying to imply that Canada has distinct separate elections from the US? Come off it!

Best of luck to you, Duke!

Why ? Wouldn’t you want to live under Matt_Mcl_MP?

(uh, let me rephrase that…)

Sorry, Coldfire, just got my tickets today–flying straight out of Heathrow to Philadelphia on 22 December. A number of free weekends are around, though, between now and then.

Thanks to everyone who’s written in to this thread. It’s going to be a very nerve-racking time over the next few weeks but I had to make this decision.
