I take it that the lights on your tree “don’t blink”. 
Even though our topper is a star, I chose other because it’s not just any star. This is what we have. It’s a replica of the one my fiance had growing up in the 70’s which is good because an original was going for over $1000 and they had a tendency to cause fires. 
Usually a teddy bear. But this year, nothing - it’s just the end of the ribbons up there. I think my teddy is a bit too heavy for my tree.

I just have a 2’ tree so I can’t put a regular star up there. Then I found this nice clear plastic moravian star that my mom had bought, and I thought it was just an ornament but it turns out it has a hole in the bottom to put it on the top of a tree. So after 8 years, I finally have a star atop my tree.
I chose angel, but my little girl calls it a sky fairy and I think her idea is cooler.
The last few years we had a tree it was a blown glass Wizard of Oz flying monkey.
I still have the Little Drummer Boy tree topper that graced every tree I had when I was a child, so that is on top of our tree. 
This year I have a Beagle-shaped tree topper that I love (my dog is a hound mix). I found it in a catalog last year, too late for Christmas, but I ordered it anyway and put it with all of my Christmas decorations as a surprise for this year. It worked: I forgot all about it until I put up my decorations the day after Thanksgiving!
Last year I don’t think I had any topper at all, but in previous years I’d used a lighted plastic star. It became too big/heavy when I switched from 6’ trees to 4’ trees.
Growing up we had an angel – the same one for as long as I can remember – on top of the tree.
We have a parliament of owls- snowy ones. They are about 15 cm tall and covered with real feathers- and wire feet that we can bend to hold onto the branches. It is a little fun to see how the parliament will assemble upon each new christmas tree.
I’m waiting for the “The tree has been up for two weeks and I still haven’t decorated it” option to be added before I vote.
