I know these are starting to get old, but this has been bothering me for a while. When I was a kid, I used to get books from Scholastic. One of them was a Young Adult science-fiction novel featuring a girl who lived on an ecologically-threatened future Earth. She and her father are traveling somewhere (in their hovercar) when the car breaks down in the desert. The girl wanders off while her father is fixing the car and somehow goes through a time portal to the past (possibly even our past…it seemed a lot like the early 20th century). She meets a boy, who takes her home to his granny, who’s very, very wise (and may not be entirely human) and realizes that something is different with this girl.
I can remember details about the rest of the book…there’s a large family of malcontents in the area, the number of which shocks the girl (who gets a reputation for a filthy mouth when she bursts out with “Haven’t you ever heard of birth control!?”). I can remember that there was some sort of “critter hunt” where the kids of the area beat the bushes to drive animals toward the adults to shoot. At the end, the girl realizes that Granny is an alien (or something like that) and gets sent back to the future (hey! That’s catchy…) with a baby fox and coyote (both of which are extinct in her time).
Does ANYONE remember this book? I’ve tried to Google for the elements of the story but I can’t get anything coherent out of the results.
Thank you in advance.
