You say that it would have taken you a lot of time to find the answer but you don’t say that it would have been impossible. Considering that it’s a somewhat confidential hit from over 30 years ago in a country that is (presumably) not your own, how would you have gone about finding it ? Do you have access to a secret mega-database of songs ?

I’ve heard it done this way by several people, including the Reduced Shakespeare Company. There are a couple of YouTube videos of people doing it (search for the song title and “one word off” or “one note off”). Figuring out who did it first or who performed the particular version you heard would be a challenge, especially without a year reference.

ETA: The name popping up most frequently on YouTube is “Bill Haynes”. Never heard of him, but there you go.
