Because of what appears to be a time-zone component to how individuals will see other people’s Join Date and Last Activity Date I have dispensed with the idea of that sort based on “Number Joined Same Date” that so many have provided in this thread. Thanks for doing the work, all who did.
Please use your own examination of the posts in the thread to come to your own conclusions about such things.
My apologies if you were looking forward to that sort from me. But ntucker’s file can provide the data in a handy to examine form if you want that.
I think I’m misunderstanding you somehow. All the data in my file was gathered by a single person, so it’s consistent. It doesn’t matter what timezone the data is from so long as you know it’s all from the same timezone.
What I was referring to are the individual Dopers’ lookups and how the number of others joining the same day might differ for someone else in another time zone.
Your source, if everybody were to use it, would be good for that sort of analysis, but posting the contents of posts in this thread might not be. We’ve already seen specifics between Central USA time and Australian zones. The same people might show different “Join Date” in different zones. So the total shown as joining the same day would (or could) differ on either end of the range. Granted the totals wouldn’t be wildly off, but they could vary enough that when we went for superlatives (most, least, etc.) we might get answers that not all could agree to.
I hope I have made my point more clearly, but I am prepared to be shown I’m in error somewhere.
Yeah, we’re on the same page. I was just confused by you continuing to post and refer to the ad hoc data chunks. It seems like a waste of time at this point.
I still believe there are some useful conclusions to be drawn for the data being submitted by individuals, but that the search for Most Joining The Same Day ought to be left to you or someone else using your spreadsheet data.
Still out there is a reasonable guess/calculation for time period (day, month, season, year) with the highest percentage of Active Users to have joined that period. The percentages by individual poster’s findings might be useful for that sort of thing. It’s just a study I haven’t undertaken on my own just yet.
When I started the thread I didn’t know quite a few things we have learned here, most especially how comprehensive the data mining could be. Thanks to you for that! I do hope it isn’t and hasn’t been a waste of time.
37 other people joined that day (users 37394 through 37431). Of those, only one person besides myself is ‘active’, that being spingears, who was last active on 10/28/11.
Of the 38 of us “July 17th-ers”:
20 made a total of 0 posts
11 made 1-9 posts
4 made 10-99 posts
1 made 100-999 posts
2 have made 1000+ posts (myself and the aforementioned spingears)
2 of us are currently Members: myself and The world is my sea urchin., who has a total of 6 posts and was last active on 7/17/03.
One other “fun fact”: sharing my ‘join date’ is luluBahrain, who lives here in Sacramento with me (or at least did the last time she updated her profile) and shares a birthday with my son (though she is a few years older). Alas, she hasn’t been active since 2006, so I’ll probably never know if she lives across the street…
Seriously, this thread has been interesting. Mostly, the posters named are completely unknown to me. Not surprising, given that so many that have been listed made zero to few posts. But every now and then, I’ve seen one with enough posts to make me say, “Hey, I remember that poster. Wonder what ever happened to him or her?”
I joined 7-11-2002, along with 32 others. I am 23639.
sunstone, mistee and SlowMindThinking are still active.
taggert was banned after two months or so.
Of the rest, over half of them never posted or only posted on their join date. The remainder were all inactive by 2006, and none of them were tremendously active posters.
Due to the file size limitations in my version of Excel, I asked ntucker to trim off from the file he uploaded (see here) all users who had zero posts.
From that file I gathered these gee-whiz numbers which may help in determining what constitutes an “Active User”:

I just installed Tapatalk in order to read the SDMB on my iPhone, and it brings an interesting take on the “active users” question. For whatever reason, this app will tell you what the web SDMB will not.
Under “Statistics”, it says we have 126,899 members and 6771 active members. Not sure how this is calculated, but there you go.
I found this thread idea to be a very interesting one. Even if you don’t use it, here’s my info:

Of interest (maybe only to me)
I was the very last person on this day.
A name as common as ‘Rainbow’ wasn’t taken until 2007.
Quite a few people got their asses banned within 24 hours - some with 0 posts (maybe disappeared?)
The current poster Nzinga, Seated joined the day before I did.
The only poster even remotely still around (and it’s only been a few years) is Skara_Brae, and I have never encountered that name before!
Thanks for that additional data. I’m still trying to decide the most effective way to summarize those details from everybody.
Same comments and thanks, Frank.
You might be amused by comparing those stats to the ones in the OP to see how they have changed in such a short time. Thanks.
Thanks to you, too, Tess Trueheart, and I do intend to put that sort of data to use in this thread, once I can decide how best to summarize it that doesn’t duplicate the file that ntucker has built and uploaded. I suspect that not everyone has made their own personal spreadsheet from his data.
At the very worst, the contributions by everybody who has posted here are available to all to see and analyze and form opinions about.
The participation has been rewarding and informative to me – and I hope others.
Besides me, 110 people joined the SDMB on 19 May 2011.

After eliminating all users who were banned and whose post count is 0 and, all users whose last activity is 05-19-2011 and whose post count is 0 (I did not note who was a “Registered User” and who was a “Guest”), we are left with the following 17 users:

I suspect that Wife of lion was also Ayseha, possibly with an abortive registration.
I also suspect that April 28, 2000 had some modification to the board, because it appears to have automatically logged a bunch pf people off that day. Hell, maybe it logged everybody off that day.
