Another Mass Shooting (San Bernardino)

They found thousands of rounds of ammo and explosives at their home and the neighbors have said they’ve seen “suspicious” activity in their garage.

My condolences for your friend and his family during this difficult time.

It sounds like a combination of the two. Ain’t that just a commentary on our times.

Maggie, what a terrible, brutal thing. I am so very sorry.

That’s disturbing. If it has not been downloaded I hope it can be kept from public viewing.

It seems pretty obvious it was a terrorist attack, what’s with the confusion?

Looks like they didn’t make it home alive. If the police have the cameras, I hope they do the decent thing and just delete whatever footage is on them (assuming they don’t need it as evidence against someone else).

Because many people of a liberal bent refuse to accept that such a thing could happen here. It doesn’t fit the narrative that all the evil in the world comes from white europeans.

ETA: I saw the same thing after the Bostom Marathon bombing. People trying to avoid using the words “terrorist” or “terrorism” long after it had become plainly obvious that it was an act of terrorism.

Maggie: I’m sorry about your friend.

I think there is some difference between Terrorist attack and terrorist, one being a “card carrying” member of a Terrorist Organization, and the other being a person or persons who terrorizes people by killing folks.

Straw man. What many commented is that this sounds like a combination of terrorism and disgruntled behavior.

While some on the right might see that as denial, it is more of a case of looking for a big picture that would point at the kind of Americans that could fall easily for radicalization.

“Radical postalism”.

“Military grade” or “military style” are always stupid terms that often don’t mean what people think. As a Combat Engineer I know that “military grade” explosives are often less powerful than their civilian counterparts. The military trades power for stability since they need to be able to be carried in a ruck sack and thrown off trucks or maybe even shot without blowing up.

As a broad term sure. I would not doubt they had political aims for their crimes. You don’t build IEDs for fun. (Well some people do but that doesn’t seem to be the case here) The guy hearing voices to shoot up a clinic is technically a terrorist if the voices are telling him to do it for Bernie Sanders. The definition of terrorism simply states using violence for political means. What is not obvious at this point is if the two of them came to their beliefs on their own or are part of a wide reaching conspiracy or somewhere in between. There are lots of alphabet agencies trying to figure that out right now. I would be very surprised if they were taking orders from anyone but it is possible. No need to jump to any conclusions.

But when it comes to firearms, I think we can agree that they’ve been optimized to be as lethal/effective as practical?

Maggie, I’m so very sorry for your loss…

I’m sorry for your loss. One of my friends who lives only about a mile from the location of the incident just checked in on FB (he was at work) so I know he’s OK, but I know someone else who lives in SB, and while I have no reason to think she would have been in or around that building, I haven’t heard from her to know for sure. Might I ask where you found the victim information? I am having trouble finding confirmed information on the victims, just a lot of stories reporting the names of the dead shooters.

It’s funny how the brain works. I’ve been to San Bernardino a few times in the early 90s. We flew into the now long closed Norton Air Force Base. I was stuck on a cot at the National Guard Armory there for a a week when some equipment was missing. Just that little bit a long time ago made me feel a connection to the events I wouldn’t otherwise have. It’s not rationally but there it is.

As I’ve heard before and in this thread, they don’t kill well enough to be used to hunt deer.

“Optimized” and “as practical” being the key words there.

Lower weight, lower recoil. The objective is to take the enemy out of the fight. Killing them is a bonus.

Maggie I don’t know you, but my deepest condolences. Losing a friend anytime is hard; losing a friend in such a senseless act must be even harder. My best wishes.

I tend to agree with Loach, there is still more to learn. A terrorist organization who does an attack (like Daesh in Paris or Al-Quaeda in Spain years ago) usually wants to hit a high-profile target, something that people will have to notice. A party at a center in a not-high-profile neighborhood that is near LA but certainly not inside the city (and there were probably a hundred places having parties bigger and more newsworthy than that in the past few weeks) just doesn’t add up to an organized group (albeit I expect ‘the usual suspects’ to claim responsibility, if they have not already).

I’m leaning to ‘self-radicalization’ by studying/reading, but the target was dictated by where he worked and perhaps some perceived slight he had suffered rather than to hit the biggest, flashiest target he/she could. A ‘lone wolf’, more in the manner of Tim McVeigh than Osama Bin Laden.

But as Loach says, more will be known over the next few days. We shall see.

Yeah, 12 pipe bombs. At first I thought it was a case of work rage but now it seems a bit more sinister than that.
