1980s, ATMs, DVDs, and CDs are all perfectly good, more consistent with the convention, and just look tidier.

I have a suspicion that a lot of the usage suggestions were pre-internet, and now that most of us write online a lot more style choices like this will change, by force, into what looks right on a monitor display.
