Another Movie ID - Russian film

The “Cool Movies that Nobody Else But You’ve Heard of” thread in IMHO triggered a memory of a movie that I can’t remember the title of now.

This is what I know:

It was Russian (in Russian) and probably produced post 1990; I think I remember specific references to the struggle to develop after communism. There were three (I think) main characters, all men, who are trying to get inside some sort of abandoned military(?)structure. They don’t know what’s inside it, or maybe they think there’s money/guns/something they can sell for food in there, but it’s not clear. The security system is also rather elaborate and potentially deadly, If I remember rightly.

It was a fairly long movie and the overall tone was pretty dark; scenes of cold and misty trees, dank and rusting metal rooms. For some reason I think it was directed by someone who had made a well-known film about a Russian artist or something like that, but I don’t know that for sure. For all I know the box might simply have been comparing him to that director and mentioned his name.

I’ve done a search for all Russian films post 1990 on the IMDB (387 of them), but none of the titles ring a bell.

Stalker -
Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky

It sounds a lot like it from your description, but the film was made in 1979.

That’s it, Jack!

I guess that’s why I had such trouble finding it … wrong year and misremembered information. Pretty quick answer. The film, by the way, is very unusual but interesting nonetheless. The place is not an abandoned military base, it’s something called “The Zone” and contains a room that grants your deepest desire, whether you know what it is or not. The title refers to the person who knows the route into the place; he’s called a Stalker.

The director’s other film I was thinking about is “Andrei Rubliev”, which is one I haven’t seen yet but should.

The thing is…i actually posted The Stalker as one of my movies on that thread…strange…ehh?
