btw2 - This has got to be the saddest day of my life
– “Kiss and Say Goodbye” by (I believe) the Commodores.
And Biffy, you were correct with the Bonzo Dog Band’s “Trouser Press.”

BtES2 - “San Francisco Nights” - Eric Burdon and the Animals
MD2: “Are you ready, Steve?”
Actually, I guess that should be “San Franciscan Nights”
MD2: “Are you ready, Steve?”
– “Ballroom Blitz” by the Sweet.
Right song, wrong group.
MD3:
*I always knew the boy I love would come along,
and he’d be tall and handsome, rich and strong;
Now the boy I love has come to me,
but he sure ain’t the way I thought he’d be.

No one’s answered this yet?! Baby Got Back - Sir Mix-A-Lot
LotV1:
And during the few moments we have left, we want to talk right down to Earth in a language that everybody here can easily understand*
btw6 - …We are observing your earth.
BtES1 - The Clash, “Know Your Rights”
KAL1 - “I’d like to dedicate this song to some special friends of mine on the LAPD”
LotV1: Living Color - Cult of Personality
Well, the only ones I recognized were quickly answered (I thought I had “Know Your Rights”, too) so I’ll have to sneak in with a couple of obscure ones and a bunch of really easy ones:
SG1 (1999): “Imagine an actor saying the following:” “Imagine me saying the following:”
SG2 (1994): “This makes me so nervous!” “Start.”
(hint: this track has 2 people singing 2 different songs.)
SG3 (1993): “They’re under starter’s orders, and they’re off!”
SG4: “So order now and you’ll find yourself bombarded by rock music, skillfully manipulated by the artists you love. By using television, not just watching it. Wow!”
SG5: “Remain seated please. Permane ser sentados, por favor.”
SG6: “This next one is the first song on our new album.” (at least 2 answers)
SG7: “They were so quiet about it. And then the next thing you know…”
Yes, I wasn’t sure about the group. A search (I got curious, so I had a look out there) turned up many references to “Kiss and Say Goodbye” being done by the Manhattans, but one or two Barry White references as well. Not sure which you’re looking for, so I’ll leave it at that.
btw6 - …We are observing your earth.
This one is interesting. My immediate reaction is to identify it as being from “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft,” which was originally done by Klaatu, but covered (and made much more popular) by the Carpenters. But the line comes in the middle of the song, IIRC, not as part of the intro. Indeed (again, IIRC), neither the Klaatu nor the Carpenters version had a spoken intro; the Carpenters’ having Karen sing, a capella, the opening lines.
Of course, you could be thinking of another song entirely, and since I don’t have either version of “Calling Occupants” handy to check, I’m willing to be wrong on this one.
MR1: “The cheering is dying down now, and I think we have a new, uh, candidate, and we have a new favorite vegetable which is asparagus. Let’s go back to the station.”
MR2: “Practically every one of the top 40 records being played on every radio station in the United States is a communication to the children to take a trip, to cop out, to groove. The psychedelic jackets on the record albums have their own hidden symbols and messages, as well as all the lyrics of all the top rocks songs, and they all sing the same refrain, ‘It’s fun to take a trip. Put acid in your vein.’”
Slight correction to BtES5:
BtES5 - “…bottle of claret for you if I’d realized.”
“Well do next time.”
“I’d forgotten all about it, George, I’m sorry. Will you forgive me?”
“Yes.”
“Cheeky bitch.”
Wow - I was just listening to this -
MR1: Lionrock, Fire Up The Shoesaw
I was looking for the Manhattans. Sorry, I wasn’t aware of Barry White, but I agree it does sound like something he would say.
The Carpenters version I have (Yesterday Once More compilation) has the line at the beginning of the song as part of the schtick where the alien has called the DJ on the air.
btw7 - …this record you are now playing is another example of the completion backward principle…
Well, I guess I learn (or at least remember) something every day. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve heard the Carpenters’ version in well over twenty years–told you I was going on memory–and I’d completely forgotten that.
I’m more familiar with Klaatu’s version, which you may want to check out, just as a comparison (and then again, you may not want to). It’s a little “rougher,” for lack of a better term, and as I mentioned in my earlier post, it has the alien’s speech in the middle of the song. Look for it on the album “3:47 EST” or perhaps on a hits or compilation package.
– I’ll guess again, because this is another I haven’t heard for about twenty years: The Tubes, “The Completion Backward Principle,” from the album of the same name?
Right group & album, but I was looking for a song (I believe the first song on the album) which immediately followed the spoken part.
Additional hints on my other clues:
btw1 - Here she comes, don’t say anything (HINT - Singer has a self-titled series on cable)
btw3 - One month ago today, I was happy as a lark (HINT - The last line of the intro is “I keep sayin’ she’ll be back, but today again I’ve lied”
btw4 - Hurry, hurry, step right up, See the saddest show in town for only fifty cents (HINT - Additional line in the song (sung, not spoken): “See the girl who’s collected broken hearts for souvenirs”)
btw5 - Give me that phone (HINT1 - rare vocal song by renowned guitarist)(HINT2 - This guitarist organizes the G3 tours)
Have we done this one yet?
Let’s call it LD-5: “Thank you. As you all know, you just can’t
believe everything you see and hear, can you? Now, if you will excuse me, I must be on my way.”
