Some days ago, I posted because I couldn’t follow poster’s links and was instead stuck on viglink pages.
Today, I’ve another problem. Each time I change page on the board (for instance opening a thread, switching to another forum, etc…) I get a pop-up windows stating that the server (Viglink) request a log-in and password. I just close the pop-up, but it’s annoying to do this all the time, and anyway certainly not normal. It’s just been happening for an hour or so, but I thought I would nevertheless mention it just in case.
Also, what is your location? We seem to recall you’re in Paris.
We updated the Viglink code earlier today. Things seem to be working OK on our end but perhaps some combination of location, browser, etc., is causing problems.
The issue went away by itself, while I still was on the board. So it lasted maybe for two hours.
I’m using a PC, with windows 7 and explorer, so about as standard as you can get. And yes I’m posting from Paris.
It was a windows pop-up, exactly similar to the pop-up I get when actually connecting to a site requiring an ID and password. Except that I could just close it, of course. And the pop up did mention Viglink.
It also happened only when posting, opening threads, etc… on this board. If I clicked on a link here, for instance to a news site, I had no pop-up (while logically, Viglink should enter the picture when I’m following a link, not when I’m browsing the board).
I also checked my computer for viruses yesterday and it was considered clean by my AV.
ETA : checking time, it seems it rather lasted for 4 hours or so. I again procrastinated too long…
You don’t have to worry about a virus or anything. This is what you get when whoever administers the server (in this case viglink’s server) sets the permissions on a resource wrong. The server then directed you to a resource that you did not have permission to access, so it asked for login credentials. Basically, someone at viglink screwed up.
It can happen with any web resource. It’s not restricted to viglink.
The powers that be here have chosen to tie this site into numerous other sites in order to generate revenue. This means that any misconfiguration or malware on a number of external servers could affect anyone here at the SDMB. Generally speaking, most of the malware comes from advertisers and not from the ad broker’s servers themselves, so members and charter members are safer than guests, but even charter members and members are potentially open to problems at any of the external servers that the SDMB accesses (members and charter members don’t see ads, but they still access the ad servers, and all members access viglink). Using a script blocker with stop a lot of these off-site server accesses.
