Where would Cliven stand right now, and what (if any) “more serious” measures should the government be taking?
Is there any point at which what he is doing and organising becomes a genuine “armed insurrection” deserving / requiring a military intervention? Or should it stay in the realms of civil remedies?
An actual military intervention would validate them - it would be feeding their paranoia and would ultimately strengthen their cause. They want to be fought, want black limousines pulling up in front of their ranches and men in dark suits getting out, want drone strikes. Unless they actually look like they might do some harm, non-violence is best. Although I agree - the line of “doing some harm” is very blurry, as many would say a bunch of wackos with guns threatening the federal government is crossing it . . .
I would amend this with:
tax evader = criminal
That’s what I was thinking when I wrote it - but I did want to draw the distinction between the idea of a white collar criminal offense and something like kidnapping / wrongful detainment / assault (in broadly layman terms)
Naturally - at some point tax evasion requires arrests to be made with armed police -
What I am kinda starting to wonder - so far “the authorities” have been using kid gloves with this guy in the interests of “avoiding bloodshed” with the idea that at its core the offense is “not that serious”.
On the other hand - at some point doesn’t what he’s doing cross over into something very very serious, and action needs to be taken in the interests of “not setting a precedent”?..or whatever else you want to call it? Afterall, I’m pretty sure you can’t have armed people running around calling themselves independent from the US and harrassing other citizens right?
That was the whole point of the GD thread I started: The federal government made a serious mistake by caving in to Cliven Bundy.
It got derailed for a while there as the racism got talked about and out, but if this latest thing proves to be true, I’m hoping we can get the discussion back on track again.
