One of my favorite movies, ever. And I just learned last night that he was one of the executive producers of the most excellent Michael Clayton.
Rest in peace, Mr. Minghella.
Blimey… My condolences go to his family.
**Truly, Madly, Deeply **was a terrific film, as was The Talented Mr. Ripley. I also liked The English Patient. It looks like he has at least one more film that’s completed, but I wish he could have done more.
That’s a damn shame. I was one of the few (me and RC, apparently) that openly admit to liking The English Patient, one of the more depressing films of the 90s.
What was the cause of death?
Ripley is one of my favorite movies of all time. Great performances all around especially by P.S. Hoffman.
A major loss for the industry.
My sources tell me that he died early this morning from complications (bleed) following a routine operation at Charing Cross Hospital, London.
54 is far too young. We met Mr. Minghella after a preview screening of “The Talented Mr Ripley” - nice guy, good sense of humor. He will be missed.

Sadness. The world has lost a great, great man. He certainly demonstrated the value of quality over quantity (you listening, Brett Radner? Yeah, I’m talking to you).
It just goes to show… there’s really no such thing as a “routine risk-free operation”.
Yeah, I heard the news on the radio just now. Quite a shocker. RIP.
My friend S. and I liked it too. We realize that we are in the minority.
I have watched Ripley many times.
Shit. I wasn’t expecting this director to die any time soon.
You’re not really in the minority of liking The English Patient. You might be in the minority of film goers who’ve actually SEEN The English Patient, but without digging up a stupid cite I’d bet most people who HAVE seen it actually like it or at the very very least recognize the high quality of acting and filmmaking. Those who don’t probably don’t like those kinds of sweeping historical dramas anyway, or else they’re Fargo fans who still hold an irrational grudge.
The English Patient was nominated for 12 Academy Awards. It won 9 of them. You have no reason to be embarrassed for liking it. The English Patient is an excellent film, well worth liking and much deserving of of its Best Picture Academy Award (and I say that as someone who was also rooting for Fargo, but I was happy with the wins Fargo did get).
RIP Mr. Minghella. You made some wonderful films and will never be forgotten.
