Anti-achievement at its finest: Acceptance by 20 colleges called "obnoxious"

Yup, better than you. Feel good about it.

Understand completely. That’s what it’s all about.

No, you’re thinking about the Hokey Pokey.

We’re talking about racism.

Oh.

Unless my memory is faulty, I don’t remember seeing you ever saying anything that I thought was racist. The worst I could say is that, IMO, you’ve occasionally been obnoxiously dismissive of efforts to oppose racism.

FWIW, I think Starbucks should hustle out EVERYONE who doesn’t buy something. Many a time I’ve bought a sandwich and coffee to find every damn seat taken, where there’s groups of people just hanging out with no product bought or using the wifi like its a library.

Can’t just go by what you see when it comes to such matters. You’ve got to be able to figure out that some people are just being politically correct, and when no one is looking they use racist terms. That’s how you really sniff out the racists.

You sniff out the racists by seeing what they do when nobody is looking? While I appreciate the principle involved (“character is who you are in the dark”, and all that), I think that one might present some practical difficulties.

And given the exchange, there, it almost looks like you’re saying that, despite appearances, you yourself are actually racist. Which I’m sure is not the message you meant to convey.

You have to add that snotty substitute for irony that rightwingers use when they think they’re delivering a slam to a liberal.

Doesn’t seem to bother madmonk28 or ElvisL1ves.

Not to anyone rational.

Shodan

It isn’t that complicated. “You sniff out the racists” by seeing them post things like “pants down low”. You sniff out other racists when they complain that pointing out racism is racist in itself.

IOW that means you.

I think the most infuriating and disgusting part of arguing this with “conservatives” is the part where they project their lack of empathy on white liberals by suggesting that we only call this stuff out because we’re virtue signaling. No. We’re calling this stuff out because we’re empathetic to what we actually SEE African-Americans experiencing every fucking day.

Well, to be fair, it isn’t just virtue signaling. There is also an element of self-congratulation. Not often a justified element, but it is still there.

Regards,
Shodan

Yeah, we get your motivations.

So if I see someone being mistreated and object to it, my only possible motivations are virtue signalling and self congratulation. Got it.

And a near-fanatical devotion to equality. The three chief weapons of the liberal conspiracy are virtue signalling, self-congratulation, and a near-fanatical devotion to equality.

God, you’re a piece of shit.

I do wonder if he’s actually just trolling, or if he really believes what he says, that he doesn’t understand a motivation to see people treated equally as anything other than self congratulation. I can understand it in the context that nothing that he has ever done has been anything but selfish and petty, and so he sees the motivations of everyone else through that light. That makes him not so much a good person, and pretty stupid on top of that, but the only alternative that I see is that he is just full of blind hatred.

Not saying that there are not selfish reasons to be for equality. A rising tide does life all boats, and the way to get the tide to raise is not by making the fanciest yachts fancier, but by giving the people who don’t have boats a boat. Improving the lives of the least of us improves the lives of all of us, but some are too petty and shortsighted to accept this, and get more pleasure out of knowing that others are suffering than they would from the slight increase in lifestyle we would all get if we could eliminate that suffering.

There is also the idea of “For the grace of god, go I.” It’s not a bad idea to make sure that others are treated well and equitably, as you never know when you are going to be the odd man out, and then one who is treated as the lowliest of the low. Refusing to see that minorities are treated poorly in this country is going to come and bite us in the collective white ass before we know it when we are a minority.

So, there actually are plenty of selfish reasons to be against racism that have noting to do with self congratulations, but this is not something that can be understood by those who have to measure their self-worth against that of others. For them, pushing others down is the only way to raise themselves up, and they just cannot understand any other way.

I think some people think that everyone is as racist as they are and that other people are just pretending that they’re not.

It’s probably not entirely untrue, actually. We do have a tendency to treat those who are more familiar to us with more respect than those who are strangers. You would certainly treat your parent, sibling, or child much differently than some random person. You have the same tendency to treat people who act or look more familiar to you better than those who do not.

It does require a conscious act to ensure that you are not acting on ingrained racial biases when you are interacting with those who are “different” from yourself.

There may be a rare few who actually are “status blind”, in that they truly never consider a person’s demographic status against their own when making decisions in how they relate to other people, but they are few and far between, if they exist at all.

The rest of us fall into a few categories, which I loosely group as three.

The first recognizes the flaws in their way of interacting with others, and works to improve it, as that makes the world a better place for everyone.

The second does not recognize that they have biases in the way they interact with other demographics, and tend to take offense at the suggestion that they do.

The third revels in it, because they enjoy hating people, and will find any excuse they can do to do so. They usually pretend to be the second group. Some, Like rich spencer, at least admit what they are, the rest try to act surprised that their bigoted words or actions get called out, and demand “proof” that the reason that they treated a person of a different demographic status was out of bigotry.

I am not quite sure which catagory Shodan fits into. He is either a really stupid and ignorant cat#2, or an even stupider cat#3.
