I thought I might have been whooshed, but the connection didn’t hit for me! You’re right, it does sound like he was having a gay ol’ time.
I’d put my money on cynicism, opportunism, and a general willingness to throw anyone under the bus, any time, anywhere. If he were closeted and discrete, or closeted and left “teh gay” alone, then fine. But this hypocrite paraded as an anti gay moral something or other. He deserves to have his political career end.
And, if he wants to pay the field, bat for both teams, whatever, he can start paying alimony and child support.
I have no idea if I am actually right about this, I am just theorizing here, but perhaps he is actually bisexual; he has genuine sexual interest in women, loves his wife, wants to be a family man, etc. BUT – he is also attracted to men, and despite his marriage vows, occasionally seeks out random sexual encounters with others of his own gender. He feels guilty enough about this, thinks he really should be able to control his “other inclinations” all the time, that the cognitive dissonance results in his “anti-gay” political stance.
Does that scenario make sense to anyone else?

I heard from a friend who works for him that someone in the office genuinely suggested this: he was investigating the gay agenda.

Yeah, but the actions follow the attraction in these cases. We aren’t talking about guys who are in prison or doing it for money. They’re doing it because they’re attracted to guys. If you’re not attracted, you don’t seek it out. Straight guys don’t go out looking to suck dick. It just doesn’t happen. It always kind of annoys me to hear guys who reguarly do other guys deny that they’re gay, but that’s how their own denial works, I guess. I wish they’d quit playing games and just admit they’re either gay or bi. All they’re doing is reinforcing the idea to thmselves that it’s not ok.
This is a self-parody by the right, right? I mean, this doesn’t even rise to Onion-level creativity. This reminds me of something these guys would dream up - wait, looks like someone already’s on the ball

What a novel idea !
He was deep undercover attempting to infiltrate the inner sanctum of gay policy center in the secret gay bar capitol of California. He was trying to loosen the lips of the gay fellow traveler by traveling with him, and to maintain his cover, he had a few too many drinks. But unbeknownest to him he had also be plied with illicit drugs and a gay agenda counter intelligence operation telephoned the co-opted Sacramento PD with their tight uniforms to do a stop and frisk.
Alas, our hero is now embarrassed, red-faced and slack jawed, caught with his pants down. His wide stance will not be appreciated with his constituents. But the truth will come out!
