Meanwhile, 3 infants have died of whooping cough in Kentucky so far this year. The last prior death in the state was 2018. Where I am, all pregnant woman are vaccinated against whooping cough with each pregnancy but apparently the babies and mothers were not vaccinated.
Meanwhile, back in the civilized world: Australia has NO cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since records began, because of the HPV vaccination rate:
Inspiring charts showing the difference by ‘vaccination or no vaccination’ are in the thread.
A one-year-old could be anyone from 12 months, to 23 months, 29 days. The baby may not have been old enough to get the vaccine by the time it got measles.
If you’re referring to me, that is correct. “Not required”, BTW, does not mean the same thing as “not available.” I will recommend it to anyone who asks, but I still think it should only be mandatory for that population, because the HPV virus is not spread through casual contact.
HPV vaccination is not required anywhere in the U.S.; it apparently is mandatory for specific groups in a few small countries like Greece and Belgium.
As for Australia, congratulations are due for its achievements in cervical cancer prevention. Australia does have a history of spawning influential antivax groups like the AVN and has had a loud minority creating havoc over Covid vaccination.
Israel’s vaccination schedule calls for children to get the MMR at 12 months and in 1st grade. Because of the current outbreak, health authorities are also advising an earlier MMR dose at 6-11 months.
Babies’ vulnerability to measles highlights the importance of vaccinating older kids. Too bad that so many parents ignored that necessity.
Don’t forget that for some years, the HPV vaccine was for females only, and later approved for use in boys and men. Throat and oral cancer has decreased in frequency as well, although the fact that fewer people smoke has helped.
By “casual contact”, I mean that you can’t get HPV from sitting next to someone in class, or from a swimming pool, or standing in line behind someone at the grocery store, that kind of thing.
What the fuck difference does it make that “casual contact” doesn’t spread it?
The point is that normal human behavior does spread it. And now we have an effective means of dealing with it. If the idea that normal human behavior includes things that makes you uncomfortable, then fuck off. Your moral judgments are not worth sacrificing human health
